Christopher Columbus was an Italian born navigator who sailed in the service of Spain. He is commonly described as the discoverer of the New World America. Although Columbus was in search of a westward route to Asia by sea, the discoveries he did make were more important and valuable than the route he failed to find. And there is good circumstantial evidence, though no documentation, to suggest that both Portuguese and English fishing vessels made the crossing during the 14th century; they probably landed in Newfoundland and Labrador. Columbus, though he sailed a…

Christopher Columbus viewed the “New World” as an inspiring land of beauty, one which seemed flawless in his eyes as he arrived in the month of November. Upon discovery of the land he noted, “All are most beautiful, of a thousand shapes, and all are accessible and filled with trees of a thousand kinds and tall, and they seem to touch the sky.” (Columbus 26) However, for William Bradford the landscape of the “New World” posed many hardships and difficulties. In the eyes of Bradford “the weather was very cold, and it froze so hard the spray of the sea lighting on their coats, they were as if they had been glazed.” (Bradford 63) Faced with two very different views of the “New World” one has to consider who is correct, Columbus or Bradford?…

Everything that has been taught to us before this course is a lie. At least that would be what I would say if you asked me to describe what I learned in this course in one sentence. Throughout this course, I was exposed to background knowledge of historical events and figures that I hadn’t learned before. I learned everything from the truth behind the discovery of the new world, to the way our textbooks are created, to the real horrors of the holocaust, and even to the truth behind the reason our wars. I learned that behind the reason’s that the U.S claim to be for going to war, there are other REAL reasons for it. Reasons that are filled with greed and don’t benefit anyone but those who are in power. The history that I learned in this course, wasn’t the exact depiction of the one I had learned before. Actually, it wasn’t even close to being like it.…

Yes, I was very surprised to read the information or history. I was surprised because in schools we are not exposed to the Native American history as we should be. In history classes, we are given a brief overview of what happened to Native American, but not the true and complete history or the statistics that was involved. I was shocked and surprised by the genocide question. So, as humans or citizens of United States we do not make an effort to know the history, so we are part of the blame for what has happened to Native Americans.…
