Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was a novelist and an American abolitionist who is responsible for writing Uncle Tom's Cabin, some people might say the most influential books in the history of America. Her father and her brother were pastors of the Congregational Church in Litchfield. After one of her children had died, it made her contemplate the pain slaves had to face when their family members were sold and taken away, and that’s when she decided to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In 1852 when she published her first book, she became known nationally, and went on to write several more books on the same topic of slavery. Uncle Tom’s Cabin sold 500,000 copies in the first 4 years. This book brought about the controversy of the harsh reality…

The novel delves further into how religion has shaped slave mentality when Henry sets out to travel the United States in an effort to inspire slaves to rebel. The slaves respond with a chorus of, “thank God,” and “praise God,” for his arrival. Their initial praise to God for Henry’s arrival to their huts offers insult to Henry as he is portrayed as one of the few who set aside white Christianity in an attempt to break his people from the spell of a religion that has been ironically cruel to their people. From a realistic perspective, it is not God that is giving them the hope and strength to rise up but Henry. He alone should be the one that they rally behind. The Biblical teachings instruct them to be patient, peaceful and to wait for a savior such as Jesus. It weakens their resolve and it is Delany’s fictional character, Henry who encourages them to recognize that they themselves are their own…

Much of this novel takes place outside of Mr. Shelby’s plantation. Throughout this novel, the cabin travels with Tom. This cabin is a place of faith, hope, love, and forgiveness. Tom’s personality helps recreate the atmosphere originally found in the cabin in the new places to which he is transported. One can see how these valued principles travel with Tom in the events of him finding that he is to be sold, helping a woman with her cotton, and his convincing Cassy of God.…

In Harriet Beecher Stowe’s, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, she is trying to voice the harsh reality of slavery, and that with divine love for christianity even the work of the devil, such as slavery, can be ended. She illustrates these points by describing the inhumane reality of slaves and slave families, showing the lengths that a parent would go to from being separated from their child, and that with true love for christianity no one, even in those harsh conditions, can be broken.…

William Arthur Ward once said, "Real religion is a way of life, not a white cloak to be wrapped around us on the Sabbath and then cast aside into the six-day closet of unconcern." Religion is the one thing that people can usually tolerate but never agree upon. Each faith seems to have an ordained assumption that they have the correct thoughts on how to life one's life or how to think about things or the way to act in certain situations. Still, each religion has its own "sub-religions." If someone refers to Christianity, there are several different religions that are blanketed under that umbrella: Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, and Presbyterian are just a handful. The inconsistencies that are associated with everyone's belief about religion run into deeper ruts of confusion. This confusion leads people to have distorted views as to what they believe and what their religion is all about. This is no different from the feelings about slavery by Christians in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Throughout the novel, Christianity presents itself in a few different lights; as a twisted and deformed glimmer of what religion is supposed to be with undertones of bigotry and prejudice, an innocent yet naive child that brings joy to everyone he or she meets, and as Uncle Tom himself, the standard for what a Christian is supposed to be. These different portrayals of Christian living come from Stowe's own beliefs about Christians and brings them into the light.…

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ by Mohsin Hamid uses the narrative technique monologue, which is a long uninterrupted speech of a character directly addressing another character or the audience. The use of monologue facilitates Hamid’s viewpoints to go across the reader effortlessly. The effect of the usage of monologue is that Hamid engages the reader directly drawing them into the narrative by the creation of a nameless American character who mirrors the audience. Another outcome of using monologue is that it silences American’s point of view and therefore Hamid can present his Pakistani/Muslim perspective. The disadvantage of the monologue is that it presents an unreliable narrator but however, Hamid uses the unreliable narrator as an advantage in his novel to question the Americans about believing everything that American media throws at them. Overall the usage of monologue plays a pivotal role in expressing Hamid’s stand and he utilises this literary technique to his maximum.…
