A.)PARISH INVOLVEMENT - History

The Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Tagbilaran City was built on a promontory overlooking the city’s scenic bay.

The church’s structure was originally a clubhouse of the Knights of Columbus Council 3290. Erected in 1955, this was the venue of the K of C’s social and religious functions, foremost of which were the Holy Masses held regularly for the members and the families of this fast-growing organization. With Boholanos being well-known for their religiosity, these masses were a great boon to nearby communities.

Eventually, the church became a chaplaincy, whose primary goal was to provide for the spiritual needs of the increasing number of the Filipino-Chinese populace. Rev. Fr. Thomas Chao, a refugee from mainland China, was the first resident chaplain. In 1995, it finally became a full-pledged parish.

From a clubhouse, the structure of the church building has metamorphosed into a work of art -- reminiscent of old Gothic designs -- with its roof sharply pointing heaven-ward and with three gables in each side. This well-ventilated church can properly seat 500 people at a time.

The altar differs sharply from the altars of ancient churches that abound in Bohol. The main altar is a landscape painting on the wall, of sea, clouds and sky as backdrop to a sculpted heaven-ward rising Christ in its midst. Beneath the bronze figure of the Risen Christ is the sepulcher from which He emanated, with its half-opened tomb and stone cover.

Midway on the right side wall is a beautifully-made rock grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, with St. Bernadette kneeling beneath, among the rocks where a real fountain flows. Across the aisle, in the middle of the left side wall, stands a life-sized Crucified Christ. A portrait

The church was funded and oversaw by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese who chose Vignola as the designer. The Vignola's design utilizes a Latin-Crossed plan with a single aisle. Above, there is a broad nave with a shallow transept, below are coupled corinthian columns with lowered arcades. The arcades are shallow to not distract from the line of entablature and attic decorations toward the altar.4 On either side of the nave there are three interconnected chapels, with two additional chapels on the sides of the apes. The structure is capped off with a dome which sits over the crossing of the nave and the transepts. Above the chapel are windows which allow the light to flood in, especially on the nave. The Corinthian pilasters are placed systematically to control the flow of light to create a dramatic build up to the highly lighted altar. The bay before the dome is slightly smaller and darker then the others. On the nave, Giovanni Battista painted, The Triumph of the Name of Jesus, with fresco.3 Including the mural, all the paintings and sculptures within the church were created in unison for the benefit of…

The church was designed in such a beautiful way that people come just to see the decorated chapels. There are two of these chapels - the lower chapel and the upper chapel. The lower chapel is highly decorated, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the reign of King Louis IX, this area of the cathedral was reserved for palace staff. The architecture in this chapel is stunning; the ceiling is painted to appear a starry sky, the walls hold representations of the Apostles, and even the floor holds tombstones of reverends and treasurers of the Sainte-Chapelle. The one negative thing about the lower chapel is that it is quite dark. This is a contrast to the upper chapel. The upper chapel is light and full of color, and is known as the “Highlight of the Monument.” The decorations show art and religion working harmoniously, and there is a sense of holiness in this area because this is the chapel in which the Holy Relics were kept. Although both of these chapels are very beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful thing of all in this cathedral are the stained glass windows. Appearing in dominant colors of blue and red, there are about 600 square meters of these stained glass windows. The art dates back to a long time ago - the twelfth century craftsmanship is ancient, yet so perfect to the cathedral. What is even more stunning about these window panes is that they can be read in arches that go from left to right. In fact, they tell…

This was commissioned by Palla Strozzi for his family burial chapel. The Adoration of the Magi marks the moment when the infant Christ was first shown to the Gentiles. The theme and the garments of the Magi were appropriate to a sacristy where the clergy dressed themselves and prepared for saying the Mass, during which Christ becomes manifest in the Eucharist on the altar. The frame recalls earlier Gothic examples but the forms are now unified by an exuberant vitality, combined with greater depth and naturalism. The left and right gables feature roundels of the Annunciation, while in the central gable a youthful God blesses the scene; and the prophets recline in the spandrels. In the predella, the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt, and the Presentation in the Temple appear almost as one continuous strip. Three small scenes in the arges of the main panel narrate moments in the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem. In the left arch the Magi gaze at the star, in the center the kings ride up on a road toward Jerusalem, and on the right they are about to enter the town of Bethlehem. The cave is evident, along with ox, ass, and manger, and the modest family. The oldest Magus prostrates himself before the Jesus with his own crown on the ground; the second kneels and lifts his crown; the youngest waits his turn. Attendants crowd the space along with animals.…

The painting has linear perspective and in the horizon there are hills and buildings. The size of the figures in the painting diminishes as they reach the background, also depicting perspective. The vanishing point of the painting appears to be just above the middle of the pictures, where a crucifix is shown. The painting is symmetrical. There are about seven people on the right side of the painting while on the left side there is only two men, one kneeling and one standing. The left side of the painting is balanced by the amount of buildings in the horizon.…

Patrick’s old Cathedral I immediately noticed how beautiful the building looked from the outside. The building is in great condition and it looks like it was just built a few years ago and when I did research on it I was very surprised when I found out that it is over 200 years old. When I went inside the church, I was amazed by the beauty of the church from the inside too. I first saw the huge altar in the front of the church and the amazing bright colors on the stained glass window above the altar. My eyes were also drawn right to the tall statues that are sitting around the back of the altar. The tall pillars inside the church running from the entrance towards the altar were also beautiful and makes the church look great. I was amazed that the church looks so beautiful even though it is so old and I am also very surprised that the architects who built were able to build it even though they didn’t have the technology that we have…

The most striking and most visually rich aspect of the painting is the towering architecture that lends symmetry and balance to an otherwise asymmetric setting. The Romanesque architecture, wholly inappropriate for the Temple in Jerusalem, serves to emphasize the classical influence of the Renaissance: a large central arch rises high above Mary’s head, flanked by enormous columns with Corinthian capitals and by two smaller arches, each slightly less than half the height of the central arch. The façade is clearly reminiscent of ancient Roman triumphal arches, as most of the scenes carved into it attest. Receding into the background is a system of nine (visible) Ionic columns supporting arches that form the inner wall of the temple.…

To the right of the altar, is a statue of Jesus with the Sacred Heart. This statue is both iconic, in that it is an image of Jesus, and anionic with the Sacred Heart with the crown of thorns. The Sacred Heart is a representation of Jesus’ love for humanity. Along the wall is a painting of Saint Joseph, holding a Jesus as a child. There is also a statue of Saint Joseph as the patron saint of the Catholic Church. Below this painting is an altar where the wine and holy Eucharist are stored when not being used during mass. On the left side of the altar is an iconic painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the mother of Jesus and along with the painting of Saint Joseph holding the Child Jesus is a representation of the Holy Family.…

Sainte-Foy is one of the earliest surviving examples of a Romanesque style pilgrimage church. That is, a church designed specifically to accommodate visiting pilgrims. (Peterson). It is basically an expansion of the Early Christian basilica church, such as Old Saint Peters Basilica. The former aisles on either side of the nave were extended around the transept and apse to form an ambulatory aisle circling the perimeter of the church (Adams, 383). This permitted the pilgrim to circumambulate the entire church without entering the central vessel, leaving the monks undisturbed access to the main altar in the choir (Rice). The nave and two transept arms are capable of holding hundreds of faithful pilgrims who may all see the priest officiating on the main altar located underneath the crossing. (Bultez, D.) A very prominent feature in many Romanesque churches is the radiating chapel. In the Abbey Church of Sainte Foy, there are 3 small radiating chapels around the main apse and two chapels of unequal size added to the east side of both transept arms (Adams, 383). These smaller chapels were dedicated to saints and the Madonna (Zurakowski, D).…

The Gero Crucifix, had a more conspicuous place in its surroundings that The Good Shepherd did. Given that the wooden statue stands at 187cm tall and 167cm wide, and suspended over the church’s altar, it would have been difficult for any visitor to ignore the piece. Like The Good Shepherd, The Gero Crucifix had gold accents. These accents, its size, and physical three dimensionality served to draw further attention to itself and its…

Located in the church’s apse, it is likely a result of the patronage of the great Emperor Justinian I (Stokstad 274). In the center of the mosaic, we see the transfigured Christ in great power and glory. He is surrounded by a beautiful blue halo known as a mondorla. His feet do not touch the ground; rather, His body hangs in the air, above the mere mortals beneath Him.…

There are other witnesses depicted in this painting to this betrothal including, Mary Magdalene, Saint Ursula, Saint Agnes, and a collection of angels (Zimmerli Art Museum). There are angels that hover over the throne were Virgin Mary is sitting with baby Jesus. There are four angels wearing red gowns holding up a lavish green drapery behind the throne. There are two other angels relatively smaller than the others kneeling on two platforms of the throne holding a golden crown that hovers over Virgin Mary’s head. The angels above and on the platform have shimmering golden halos behind their heads, as well as the three other witnesses, Virgin Mary, Jesus, and Saint Cathrine of Alexandria. Virgin Mary’s gold halo appears to be the most vibrant. There are two more angels at the foot of the Virgin Mary who are depicted to have string instruments in their hands and they are looking up at her. These angels have no golden halos and their wings are striped red and black. The panel below the main altarpiece has five figures and five spaces for them. The…
