By becoming a ranch hand he found himself in the state of Colorado where he enlisted for the Navy a second time. He joined the Navy in February 1999 and trained to be a Navy SEAL in Coronado, Calif. The rugged challenging training he had to go through to become a Navy SEAL really showed him that it isn’t easy being a solider and that he had to work extremely hard and not give into the powerful temptation of quitting. The tough training conditions and activities really molded him into one of the best U.S. sniper of all time. Nothing he could have imagined would come close to the gruesome scarring experience of war. Looking over a couple theories that related to Chris and his family, it seemed like attachment theory fit best. I believe that attachment theory is best for Chris because he had that secure attachment with his mom that allowed him branch out and do something completely unexpected of him. He knew that if anything went wrong he had someone there who had his back, which was his mom and sister. That knowledge of security allowed him to go on this journey and experience the unknown. Attachment theory, established by John Bowlby, is a set a concepts that are used to explain the emergence of the emotional bond that forms between an infant and their primary caregiver. It then goes on to explore that way in which the bond affects the child’s emotional…

He was an ill-prepared individual and over confident. His over confidence reached a point where it scared people around him. We can see an example of his lack of preparation and arrogance when in April1992, he meets Gallien, a union electrician, while hitchhiking. Gallien recalls “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near much food and gear that you would expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip” (Krakauer 4). This is a crystal clear example of how ill-prepared Chris was. He was blind by his over confidence in that he didn’t see how dangerous this trip could be. He didn’t have adequate gear or food, but yet he expected to survive for four months. He thought he had everything he needed in his bag pack and the rest wasn’t worth having or carrying with him. . He wanted to proof to himself that we could live without civilization, help or anything man made. He thought that because he survived in Mexico, with Alaska the situation would be the same. Chris’s overconfidence was so present in his personality that everyone who surrounded him could notice it. His father, Walt recalls Chris reaction in 1986, by the end of the summer, when he tried to talk to Chris about his overconfidence. Walt said, “Chris was good at almost everything he tried, which made him…

    Chris Mccandless Journey

    • 604 Words

Chris in my mind was trying to be someone he wasn’t, he thought to hard on life and complicated it all to be like the philosophers he idolized. He was wanting to “find” himself when he was already in college working on his degree. Going on this trip was throwing away all the luxuries of life and living how we used to before technology, living off the land. And how the philosopher talked of how he did and found himself and loved it, chris wanted to have that experience. He was trying to be someone he was not. He needed to be seeking things he thought and knew would make him happy instead of taking the path someone else took to get a certain result, because you can't and won't cause everyone is different. Chris didn't need to go to the wild and live off the land to be happy and find who he was. Chris was a hard worker, that was a people person, everyone that met him liked him. I feel Chris wasn't the type to stick in one place for a long time, and he needed to be surrounded by people and that made him happy. But since he is stubborn he fell through with his plan to go to Alaska, even though on the journey to where he wanted to be he found who he was and what he was meant to do. He was met to meet lots of people and make connections everywhere, while finding little side jobs. That made Chris…
