Choosing My Career
Lately my own experience with SBS as a degree program has opened my eyes to many different careers in several fields. I have found that for some entry level positions I do not need to have the degree yet, but in the process of pursuing it. I have spoken with a few employers as a youth counselor or youth instructor incases with child protective services, behavioral careers at the hospital and also with some counseling offices that are having employees out in the field working. Figure 1 in the article shows the comparison between “Knowing why a person works, knowing how a person works, and knowing whom we work with” (Parker, Khapova, & Arthur, 2009, p. 293). Which is very important especially with the SBS degree. You need to know why you are doing what you are doing. Typically with this degree it allows you to work side by side with individuals or with families who may need a little extra help figuring out their family problems or to just make sure they are safe. It is important to understand why you would want a degree in this field knowing that you have to face tough family decisions daily or to see children going through things that children shouldn't have to and there not being much you can do at that point besides what is in the job description. Knowing how a person works is also very important because this allows you to understand yourself with the experience or the knowledge you posses. Finally knowing whom you work with will help because you know you are all working towards the same goal, that you might not be on the same project but are all trying to achieve the same outcome. This allows you to connect with your coworkers and ask for advice on what they would try in any given situation. When I present myself in an interview I want them to know the classes that I have taken and plan to take. Taking classes in Family Studies or in Child Development is going to allow me to apply my education in many aspects of a counselor or instructor position. This will

I have been studying for the last couple of year, counselling safeguarding courses and voluntary work. I am hoping this will all help me with becoming a social worker in the future. I have found the role of volunteering with domestic abuse very interesting and challenging. I feel it is very important to focus on time with the children and draw learning from them. I wanted to begin the foundation degree to adapt my current practice to ensure I am confident in my job role and to make sure the children in our setting get the most out of their experience. One of the strengths I feel I bring to my job is that I feel everything should be done with a purpose. Doing things with no reason feels a waste of time and if we only do things that contribute to making our practice stronger we will become better practitioners.…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

As a child, I always found myself participating in creative activities. My siblings and I were always playing make believe from acting as if we were in college or grown up to running up and down our neighborhood’s sidewalks as secret spies on a mission to save the world! When I was first introduced to writing short stories in grade school, I became hooked because I could literally depict any image I wanted to and that sparked my 7 year old brain. There were always movies playing in my head; it was crucial to me to produce those visions. Now, as a senior in high school, I have become partial to not only writing fictional narratives but non-fiction narratives as well. I have applied and been accepted to Clark Atlanta University…

There are currently two options I have, one, to continue attending Ivy Tech Community college for the next two years, and then transfer to IUPUI, or my other option is simply to just finish out my Criminal Justice degree at Ivy Tech. I have not decided exactly which I option I am going to choose, however, I am leaning towards the transfer to IUPUI. I want to have an excellent education when I start my career because I do not want to stop at the first job I receive. Coming out of high school, I had no unearthly idea what I wanted to do in my life. Finally, after the years flew by, and maybe it’s from watching too many TV Shows, it just kind of hit me that I wanted to have some type of law enforcement job. I love the hard work it takes, perks as a police officer, intelligence, the chance to be able to save lives, the work force you would be a part of, and much more. My goal is achieve multiple promotions at my career and be at the highest rank I can be. I always have in the back of my mind though, that I have started school at such a later age than I should’ve, that I should just go for two years, then graduate from Ivy Tech and try my luck in finding a job. Then, if I can’t find a job, or better yet, do find one and find out for some reason I would not be able to get a promotion for some reason, I could always go back at a later time to receive a higher degree. What I would want to get out of my degree is a wonderful career in law enforcement. If being a police officer is the best thing that I would be, I could accept that and be with happy. I would love to climb those ranks and maybe someday receive something higher than a police officer. Anything would do however, I will be working as hard as I can these next few years of my life to fulfill my goals. Not going to college right out of high school may just have been the…
