Choir Club Research Paper
The idea that a person cannot be friends with another person solely based upon social class, stigma, or appearance is one of the most devastating issues of the present day United States. This issue seems to be the most prevalent in high schools, where kids "clique up" and never seem to enjoy the world outside of their shell of a friend group. Being involved with athletics as well as the fine arts has opened my eyes to all of these great people and it hurt me to know they may never become friends with one another just because of the social stigma behind a "jock" or a "choir boy", so I decided to make a change. As a captain of the wrestling team and a captain of the show choir, I tend to have a lot of influence over my peers in those activities. …show more content…
My favorite example of this is when I introduced one of my choir friends (Lizzie) to one of my wrestling buddies (Jake). Before the two met in person, they thought they hated each other, but after a few short minutes they began to see a lot of interesting similarities within each other. To this day, the two are very close. To further integrate the different friend groups in my high school, I have created and started two student groups, Peace, Love, and Pancakes (PLP), and FCA. In PLP we open up the cafe at our high school and serve free pancakes to the students along with a message from one of the student leaders. This has allowed us to create an open and friendly place for all the different groups in the high school to come eat, hang out, and mingle with others. The world is full of amazing people, the problem is that people don’t take the time to get to know a person or step out of their comfort zone. I know that no matter where my future takes me, my college and workplace may have pre-developed “cliques”. Due to my experience and success at my high school, I will be able to tear apart these clicks and integrate my peers to create a more productive, friendly, and positive

    The Seven Habits

This involves habits four, five, and six. The habits are “Think Win-Win”, “Seek First to Understand, Then to be understood”, and “Synergize”. We can make meaningful, productive relationships with these. Sean Covey wants everyone to win. If we think positive, show self-confidence, and treat everyone with respect we will accomplish the goal. “Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win” (152). Habit five helps us with understanding each other. If we actually listen to others we will bond more. We can make more out of every conversation. We cannot just hear what we want to, we need to listen to their emotions. We also need to pay attention to their body language because, this helps us see what they are feeling. In habit six, Covey explains the way everyone in the world is categorized. We can be someone who tolerates diversity, and except others but keep to themselves. We can be the shunners, who do not like the idea of diversity at all, or celebrators, who like the idea of diversity and include everyone. To make relationships with everyone we should be celebrators. “We are all a minority of one” (186). When one synergizes, they are working together with everyone. True relationships come from coopaperation. Covey wants us to know that working together is good. For example, geese help each other a lot. They are always working together to find a better solution. He wants us to all act like…

In seventh grade I used to be in marching band. I had done band in sixth grade as well, but this year it was marching band. I played the clarinet and I was pretty good at it. In the middle of the school year we had a parade that our band had to march in. It was something that I had never done before, so I was a little bit apprehensive about doing it. People who who were new to marching band like me were referred to as “newbies”, which wasn’t very many people. During marching band practices all of the “newbies” were put in the back because we didn’t really know what we were doing. Over time all the newbies got better, but that didn’t seem to apply to me. I could keep tempo and play my instrument while marching in sync with everyone and I would…

At a young age, I waited on the benches for my mother to retrieve me from carpool. I observed my peers laughing together as they walked towards the gym for after-school sports. My mother, who soon arrived to find her kindergarten son sitting in solitude, scheduled numerous parent-teacher conferences. She would share her concerns while my teachers assured her that my "individuality" was what attracted friends to me. I had been a leader rather than a follower regardless of the opinion of others, and, to this day, that has remained static. I have evolved from that careless kindergarten leader, to an aspiring college graduate.…

Children tend to go out for sports to make friends, improve relationships, become better at the sport, and to stay in shape. No matter what the reason is when you join the sport, you will find out that you gained numerous friends over the course of the season. As every sports season comes around the corner, you can visualize how close people on the same teams grow. At our high school, people eat with their teams, lift with their teams, practice with their teams, and play with their teams. The environment is set up to create friendships. Being a senior in high school, I have had the opportunity to participate in multiple team sports. Throughout my high school experience, I have noticed is that the teams who grow the closest, have the greatest success. One piece of evidence is our soccer team. When I came into high school, we had the opportunity to meet new coaches. Coach Garza and Coach Javi, the soccer coaches, are no doubt, the best coaches I have ever had the chance to be taught by. They both possess the rare trait of being able to bond kids together. The soccer team I am on has the strongest bond I have ever seen. Since I joined the team as a freshman, we have made two consecutive state trips, which were the first and second in school history. We also achieved the runner-up status in the championship game. If there were one trait I could relate our success to, it would be the bond we share as a…

    Choir Critique

To make up for the holiday concert I missed, I went to church on Sunday, Jan. 20 to critique the choir there. It was at Life Center in Tacoma, with the choir being made up of about 20 people; there were equal amounts of men and women singing. The service started at 10:30 a.m., with the first song, (which was more of a hymn) Bless the Lord Oh my Soul contemporarily sung by Matt Redman. The songs which were sung that day did have contemporary versions, but were sung usually acapella or with only a piano. There was one instance where the audience was expected to sing with the choir, too. What I noticed from the choir during this first song was that every single person was singing with pure emotion, naturally swaying with the beat of the song throughout. I could completely tell that they felt the rhythm of the song because they kept the tempo at a steady pace, but filled their voices with energy. The next song was The Only One being sung by a man named Anson Dawkins, who was the soloist. This song wasn’t considered as classical choral material, but Anson did an excellent job at keeping the same tone quality through the different ranges of the song; when the notes were starting to get a little high for his range, he didn’t force the notes out, but instead let them naturally flow through. Next, the choir sang We Wait by Don Moen, with Matt leading the song with the piano. When the choir broke into the five part harmony, however, the men were overpowering the women and could’ve listened better to improve their intonation. In other words, they were really sticking out among the other parts. Another song was Nothing but the Blood, also a hymn. In this song, the choir blended so well because everyone’s vowels matched. It made it easier to understand the text, too, because of that. One imperfection I heard was that at the end, everyone finished their note at different spots, making the ending sound a little sloppy.…

The need to affiliate with others and to be accepted by them is hypothesized to be as basic to our psychological well being as hunger and thirst are to our physical well being (Raviester and Leary, 1995). (Meeting, Liking, and Becoming Acquainted, SPT Reader P. 50) One doesn’t begin to realize how important social interaction is until it is gone. Each individual seeks some sort of relationship throughout his or her lives, even as an infant. Relationships are looked as a bond between two individuals, but it is not limited between those two. People all have the need to affiliate, but not all people are the same and differ in the strength of their need for affiliation. When meeting new people in a small group experience you are faced with many different emotions, situations, and many thoughts racing through your mind.…

This was because I didn’t really want to play the more masculine sports, like football and baseball. This narrowed my possible list of friends down to the people who would want to befriend one of the few unathletic kids at my school. They only sports I did play were kickball at recess, and soccer, on a team that wasn’t very good. I didn’t start to gain more friends until my dad convinced me to play flag football in fifth grade. This lack of friends caused me not to learn important social skills. Me missing this skill has caused me to be very socially awkward and not being able to carry a conversion. I am still trying to learn these skills. The product of all of this is that, because I didn’t do very many sports, I am overweight, and because of my lack of social skills, I have a very low self esteem. Although, over time, my social skills have sharpened up a bit and I’ve become more active, so I’m starting to overcome my demons.…
