A study at Florida Atlantic University found that people who underwent chiropractic adjustments had a fifteen percent lower rate of the flu than people who didn 't have their backs cracked. People often go to chiropractors to receive treatment for back pain, neck pain, headaches, car accidents, repetitive motion injuries or strains, and sports injuries. Twenty million Americans use chiropractic services every year. Chiropractic represents the most rapidly growing segment of the professional health services market. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands officially recognize chiropractic as a health care profession. Chiropractic care means it is done by hand. Aligning the spine, relaxing the muscles, and healing the tissues allow for proper nerve, blood, lymphatic, and energy flow (Coulter). Chiropractic 's special feature is that it has a direct effect on the nervous system. The nervous system connects us with the outside world and directs the functioning of our inside world. The immediate goals of chiropractic care are to relieve pain, heal tissues and restore function. With preventive and maintenance care, the goals are to prevent future problems from developing or at least to minimize their magnitude. Pain is perceived by the nerves; it is caused by pressure, decreased blood flow or accumulation of toxins. Chiropractic adjustments reverse all three causes of pain (Coulter).
