CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study Black ants are one of the common insects that are found in the Cordillera Region. They invade houses, try to find their nests and carry foods that are not fixed well, look for piles of coarse, stringy wood particles, dead insect parts and other debris that are sifting from cracks in the siding, behind moldings, in the basement and attic, and under porches. Chili are commonly used by the Cordillerans to flavour dishes It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium and manganese. People are using commercial insecticides to control the population of black ants. But these insecticides contain chemical compounds that can harm our environment. They are also expensive and that people cannot afford. The researchers aim to study the effectivity of Green Finger Pepper and Ethanol in controlling the population of Black ants in the community.

Statement of the Problem The study aims to determine the potential of Green finger pepper as an alternative pesticide in controlling garden black ants. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following inquiries: 1) What are the effects of each of the following treatment in inhibiting pests specifically black ant? a) T0. Insecticide b) T1. 100% green finger pepper extract (10 ml pure extract) c) T2. 75% green finger pepper extract (7.5 ml extract and 2.5 ml ethanol) d) T3. 50% green finger pepper extract (5 ml extract and 5 ml ethanol) e) T4. 25% green finger pepper extract (2.5 ml extract and 7.5 ml ethanol)

The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the effect of application of propoxur (a carbamate insecticide) on the American cockroach. From experimental observations, it has been concluded that the amount of propoxur needed to kill 50% of the test subjects (referred to as LD50) was 0.0487(%w/v) which deduces to be 0.22012mg per cockroach (calculated for 0.452grams of cockroach). The conclusions were drawn immobilising the American cockroach with ice then applying propoxur to be incubated at 23 degrees Celsius. Literature findings in the past were sourced and results were compared with the current study.…

Borrell’s article describes the study of chili peppers through the field studies of Joshua Tewksbury, an ecologist interested in finding the reason why chili peppers are spicy and if bugs can be blocked by chili peppers and in that way avoid fungus. This article is part of the Smithsonian online magazine. It lacks a reference list; however it makes references to similar studies such as Perry, Billing, Sherman, Nabhan, Bosland, Machnicki, Foley, Levey, Manchego and Carlo’s.…

    Callosobruchus Maculatus

Thus, the need for alternatives to mainstream pest control is quite pressing. In reality, people have been using different materials as pest control against Callosobruchus maculatus for centuries. Ancient Egyptians in 1000 B.C., for instance, used ash dust as pest control for their stores of grain (M. Hafez, Nadia Z. Dimetry, and M. H. Abbass). More recently, essential oils have been considered effective pest control methods since they are comprised of volatile compounds and are not harmful to most mammals (G.K Ketoh et al.). While the effectiveness of essential oils has been tested, the effectiveness of sunflower oil specifically is uncertain and thus needs to be tested. The goals of this experiment are to determine whether sunflower seed oil will be effective in preventing the C. maculatus from laying eggs on the Vigna unguiculata. Based on the success of other essential oils, if the Vigna unguiculata are covered with concentrations of sunflower oil, then the C. maculatus will not be able to lay as many eggs on the beans as they would in the absence of sunflower oil. For the purpose of testing this hypothesis, the independent variable is the presence of sunflower oil, whereas the dependent variable is the number of eggs found on the beans after a period of…

The Rasberry Crazy Ant, also known as the Tawny Crazy Ant or Nylanderia Fulva, originated in the countries of southern Brazil and northern Argentina before the exotic species made it’s way into America, most likely by a cargo ship. The Rasberry Crazy Ant is a red brown, tenth of an inch, insect covered in tiny hairs that has the ability to excrete an acid that acts as an anctidote to Fire Ant venom. Due to their slow speed, which only allows them to travel about a tenth of a mile to half a mile per year, these insects have not spread far past the southeastern coast of America. Their speediest form of travel though is in trash or by people and animals. The ants also reproduce more quickly than other ant species because each colony contains multiple queens rather than just one. Since about 2013 the crazy ant has only made their home in over twenty counties in Texas and Florida as well as some spottings in Louisiana. The first record of these ants was in 1938, but they became better known in 2002 by Thomas Rasberry, an exterminator, hence their name.…

Carpenter ants can become pests when they build their nests in damp areas within human construction, or search for food in homes. If an infestation occurs, it is usually because all or part of an existing colony moves into the home from the outside. The ants can enter a home in a number of ways including tree branches or utility lines touching a structure, cracks and openings around windows and in foundation walls, ventilation openings in an attic or roof, and through foundation heating or air conditioning ducts. Carpenter Ants typically build their nests in wood with a moisture content above twelve to fifteen percent, so it is important to monitor rain leaks, bathtub leaks, kitchen floor leaks, or any water leaks that affect wood, for the…

Seeing a cockroach lately in your bathroom? Or, are you surprised how those ants are marching nicely on your kitchen wall? If you think that they’re just other creatures who ‘deserve’ to dwell within the house, this is because you think that they are only a few in numbers. But, you will be startled to see the batallions of ants, living permanently under your bedroom door. Ok, you are getting very upset with this condition, and you try to get rid of them by using common insects killer spray. It might work, but it is temporarily. What makes you more surprised is their ‘counter attack’, in which they can spread throughout the house and sting you or any of your family members.…

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

We have been holding out in our colony surrounded by cliffs and the only way to get in and out is to cross the stream. We had a branch crossing the stream but we had to knock it into the river when we seen the black ants attacking.…

Mr Del Rey has an infestation of the leaf cutter ant, locally known as the ‘bachac’ in his garden. He needs to get rid of them as soon as possible and wants to use an insecticide that will get the job done quickly and efficiently. This experiment seeks to help Mr Del Rey choose the more effective insecticide by comparing the time taken to kill or achieve knockdown of bachacs using two different types of insectide; a commercial spray insecticide and a powder insecticide. The insect will be declared dead (i.e. knockdown would have been achieved) when it has flipped on its side or back, laying motionless. The effectiveness of each insecticide will be determined by the average time taken to kill the bachacs; the shorter the time taken, the more effective the insecticide.…
