Resource: “Over 30 Workers Trapped After Chilean Copper Mine Collapse” article found in the Electronic Reserve Readings. Research additional articles and information about the Chilean mine collapse. There are two parts to the assignment, as detailed below. Part 1: Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper using this and other articles as a resource. Because communications must be designed with the audience in mind, answer the following questions in your paper:  What are some considerations to remember given the different roles and people in the audience? o What would be the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident? o What would be the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about this incident?  What actions must you take before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended? Part 2: Draft two written communications from the mining company announcing the accident, using what you have learned about the audience and effective messages. One communication should be directed to the families of the trapped miners; and the other as an internal news release to employees in the company. For both, identify the most appropriate channel—face-to-face, e-mail, video, memo, and so on. Submit one consolidated MS Word paper encompassing Part 1 and Part 2 of the assignment. Clearly identify Part 1, and Part 2, in the consolidated document.
Format the document consistent with APA guidelines.

Not a single person ever actually knows how a situation like this is going to turn out until it happens. The company that the miners work for has to inform the families that their loved ones are trapped underground. They also have to inform their workers as to what has occurred and what is going on. There is preparation for these situations, but even if drills are practiced over and over there is nothing that can truly prepare a person for an event like this. Communication in a situation like this has to be done very carefully and the audience has to be considered. The people communicating the message have to remember that these are loved ones, friends, and co-workers that are receiving this message so they have to take great care with the use of body language and wording not to convey the wrong message in stressful time such as this. Communication in an event like this has should convey a few possible scenarios and let loved ones know what if anything they can do to help. Communication to employees should inform employees of the current situation.…

To the family of the trapped miners I would chose to use the face-to-face approach since such a sensitive matter at hand where their family member’s lives are at risk. We have just been informed of a cave-in trapping 33 miners at one of our Northern Chile copper mining location. Rescuers are drilling holes to try and locate the works. But for now there has been no confirmation as to whether the 33 miners have survived the cave-in. They are approximately 300 meters down and there is limited food, oxygen and water. So rescuers are working around the clock. We have also learned that doing the rescue there was a second cave-in Saturday causing a delay in rescue efforts for several hours.…

When presenting this message about the incident to the families it would be best to do it face-to-face. Hopefully, this would show that the company cares about its workers and their families. The families would need emotional support and someone to talk to I imagine. I would make sure that there was a grief counselor on site to help the families through this hard time. It would be best to keep others out of the loop and give the family the respect they deserve. Often when delivering this kind of message others may want to know and it often causes loved ones to become upset or angered. We want to keep this situation as calm as we can due to the circumstances.…

On March 25, 1947, in Centralia, Illinois, the explosion of the Centralia #5 Mine resulted in the death of 111 hardworking men. Most of these men dedicated their lives to the Bell & Zoller Coal Company mining coal at the company’s Centralia #5 Mine. This group of men attempted on numerous occasions to get help from agencies and elected officials that were expected to protect them. The miners found this group of people completely out of touch. The agencies and elected officials wrongly thought that writing reports and having meetings would solve a problem or make it go away by itself. Others seemed unwilling to help them for fear of the loss of their own jobs or political status.…
