My First Day at School
Not everything that we see, face or experienced can leave a lifelong print in our mind, unless some unusual situation or fearful first time facing characterized it. A first experience in the movie theater, a first flight, and a fearful car accident are the instances that leave some kind of permanent print in our memory. I do have such unforgettable experience, but my first day to school was the most powerful and deeply inscribed in my childhood mind with the fearful and stressful curiosity. It was Sunday morning that I was doing something different than my usual daily activities. By the time the morning sun come to the edge of the field, I would have been playing with my younger brother around there. Today I was caught by my mother into her tight hand in my wrist and started rubbing with cold water poured over my head that throughout my nude body.
Academic grading is a part of the teaching and learning process in today’s world, which tis there to make an accurate evaluation of students’ achievements. The academic grading system, in the United States especially, takes on the form of letter grades which is divided into five different groups (from highest to lowest level) A (90%-100%), B (80%-89%), C (70%-79%), D (60%-69%), and F (59 below), where F stands for failing. “The traditional letter grading system remains the standard method of evaluating students in academic institutions” (Moreno). However, this system becomes remarkably inefficient which tends to diminish students’ interest in learning and reduce the quality of students’ thinking. Perhaps, narrative report systems may be more efficient. Letter grades were first used in the United States in the last part of the 19th century. “Both college and high schools began replacing other forms of assessment with letter and percentage grades in the early 20th century. In the earlier ages, performance testing was the only type of testing used. “During the renaissance,

Introduction Many colleges and universities have adopted or are considering adopting a grading system that provides a larger number of marking choices than the A through F whole-letter system. This usually takes the form of a plus-minus (+/-) grading system in one version or another. While a variety of reasons have been put forth for the move to +/- grades, a key motivation is the belief that a +/- grading system can either reverse the progression of grade inflation or counter its effects by establishing more grade choices so that performance can be more effectively differentiated. This paper first reviews studies of the prevalence in American colleges and universities of +/- grading systems and, perhaps more importantly, the prevalence of schools not using +/- systems who could potentially benefit from a shift to use of this form of grading system. Because of limitations found in available data, a targeted analysis of grading systems of a selected set of universities has been conducted. The results of this secondary research are briefly reported in the second section below. Results of the first two sections indicate that there remains a substantial set of schools that do not currently utilize +/- grading and might be considering a shift to this form of grading system. Next the paper reviews literature dealing with faculty and student perceptions of +/- grading systems and the effects of these systems on the level and distribution of grades and on student effort. Substantial differences in the perceptions of the two groups are found. The major focus of this paper is the analysis of how faculty and…

In a world where people are desperate to measure each other in any quantifiable way possible, many students let a single letter define them. In the American grading system, the awarding of an A grade warrants celebration, while receiving a C leads to disappointment. The emphasis on the importance of these grades grows continually throughout the lives of students until they cannot accept anything less than A’s. Pressure leads scholars to either attempt to buy grades or assume higher grades are their birthright. This pressure is sometimes transferred to instructors who are forced to give good grades in order to placate their desperate pupils. As a result of the development of an overly sympathetic grading system, students across the nation are contending with an epidemic of inflated scores.…

Alfie Kohn explains in his article, From Degrading to De-grading, that traditional letter/number grades are a waste of time. Kohn believes teachers wrongly relish the moments they get to assign a student a grade. His opinion of the best teacher is the one that despises the grade book and wonders about the thought of giving grades at all. Alfie Kohn provides many reasons supporting his beliefs. For example, grades reduce the student’s interest to learn the material and reduce their preference for a challenge. When grades are in the picture, the student’s quality of thinking is diminished. It is also argued that grades are unreliable, not valid, and have the ability to distort the curriculum. He believes grades waste time that could be spent on learning more material and concepts. Students are also more susceptible to cheating if they feel the pressure to have good grades. Lastly, the student’s relationship with the teacher and other students could be negatively affected by the stress of grades (Kohn). However, traditional grading is essential to track the student’s progress, give them a sense of competition, and be accepted into colleges.…

I forced the door open and was blinded by sunlight and choked from all of the dust that had settled in the room. As I entered, the wooden floors slightly give way. Rusty nails poked out of the floorboards and old water stains have made designs on the walls. Woods were really rusty and at any given day this house would collapse. There was reading table against the wall and top of it there were some seashells setting. Most of the drawing on the wall were washed away but some are still there but fading. There was a closet at the right hand corner of the room. I opened the closet and there was a small plastic box at the corner of the closet. As I washed the dust away, the name Partha start to become clear. I open the box and all the seashells were still there way I left it. Looks and furniture of this room has changed but memories are still trapped into this room. Big part of that is memories involved Radi. My childhood consist of ocean and Radi.…

A grading system plays a key role in the management system of any school. But, such systems do not often relate expectations, outcomes, and performance. As each student desires to achieve a good score for each assignment, exam, project and/or report, the whole process adds heavy workload for teachers inorder to make their evaluation fair, comprehensive, and accurate. From the faculty perspective, these are necessary to avoid disagreement from students and parents. A computerized grading system is a highly desirable addition to the educational tool-kit, particularly when it can provide less effort and a more effective and timely outcome.…
