Piget believed that children learn and go through stages and sequences. We practice this in nursery by using age assessment development sheets. Piget believed that children are active learners, and so we can encourage them through play and activities. It is also believed that children imitate and transform what they learn into symbolic behaviour. We use this information by rewarding the well behaved children, in the hope that the other children will copy and imitate the good behaviour.…

The first scheduled activity for this room will to having singing time with the infants. I will have a chance to sit and sing little songs to each infant in the room. The song that I have in mind is “Pat-A-Cake” which will require hand movements such as clapping and arm rolling. I believe that this will help the infants’ cognitive development because when you sing to them, they will want to sing as well and start making little noises to go along with the song.…

Before working at the Children's Creative Learning Center (CCLC), I did not understand how wonderful Florida International University truly was. Being a fully online student I was never made aware of all the opportunities, resources, and support the FIU community shared with one another. I stumbled across CCLC by chance and I am so thankful for the opportunity to work as a student office assistant. Working with children in the center has taught me not only about their development, but their capabilities. This holds a special place in my heart, as I have a passion for children and am currently majoring in Early Childhood Education.…

To begin a group activity in music, our students need to have a commonality with each other and the educators. It is better to start with the same song each time in the group time. It is usually a “hello” song but it could be anything as long as it is simple. So the preschoolers know that a music time is starting and that we educators are in control of what we got to do. Next, we as teachers must assume that the children identify with music in some way as they hear lullabies, learn songs and melodies from television shows etc. So therefore, it is good to start with a familiar song or music. It could be “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” or “The Alphabet Song” (which happens to be the same melody (concepts of music) and you can point that out.). “Baby Bumblebee” song will be fun. We can use “The Wheels on the Bus” or “The Ants Go Marching.”…

The children then have the sand tray and the water tray. The sand tray has all different toys in and different objects with different textures that the children can play with. Then they have the water tray, which the children really enjoy. In the water tray we sometimes put different coloured water in by adding food colouring; the children really get excited by the different colour water. We also put boats and other objects in so they can play in the water. The class also has a construction area where the children build with Lego and Knex. They have a story and imaginative area where the children play dressing up and read story’s to each other. Having lots of activities to do and to chose from is all part of the foundation phase, giving the children the opportunity to chose what they want to do not to be forced in to something they do not like.…
