Child Psychology: Personal Statement
My natural ability to connect with children, range of work experiences and love of learning are qualities, which I believe make me an ideal candidate to embark on this course. I am keen to further my understanding and knowledge of child psychology, development and education. This course offers me the opportunity to engage this curiosity and take my skills to the next level. The quality of the universities teaching standards has also been highly recommended by fellow students.
Undertaking a Psychology degree has allowed me to gain a breadth and depth of knowledge. For example, through various modules and assignments on the course, I have been able to demonstrate my understanding of how a child’s learning and development can be affected by their

These experiences have given me the opportunity to extend my theoretical knowledge with practical, thus enabling a more holistic understanding of child development. I have been working as a home tutor since October 2012 in which I provide support to students in years 5 and 6 on the weekend in small groups of 3 to 4 to help develop their reading and writing skills. I also assist them in acquiring a better understanding of targeted weak areas within a subject or a subject as a whole. Strategies provided by Psychology such as tailoring lessons to each individuals learning style has helped the children in improving their knowledge base. This allowed me to understand that children have different ways of learning and flexibility and adaptability is essential for teaching. Working as a Beanstalk reading helper allowed me to improve the confidence of children who had difficulty reading, helping them grow into strong readers and independent thinkers. Having the patience to explain new words, sentences and concepts with clarity, to a younger audience has pushed me to discover how children develop their

    Without having good communication we wouldn’t be able to gain good information, form relationships, and even maintain friendships. Babies and children reply on adults to be good interpreters of their body language and first words. To be able to communicate effectively with professionals helps to work together in the interest of the children’s wellbeing. Children can easily pick up on poor relationships and negativity which could result in the child becoming unsettled and anxious if they do sense tension in the setting. Communication is also essential for all children’s learning and social development. As a practitioner in an early years setting they have a vital role in supporting communication development of all children especially those who tend to have speech problems or a communication disability. There are projects out there to help children such as the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) and Peers Early Education Partnership (PEEP). These projects highlight that long term impacts that high quality early years provisions can impact on young children. Communication in childcare is one of the best ways to provide the best care for the child on both ends - for parents and providers. Although this is a really good way to provide the best care for the child but it makes it easier to build a relationship between parents and other professionals. Using training and development helps to provide and develop new skills, attitudes and practices of a competent teacher. It will help them provide new ideas and thoughts about practive and also to be more confident in their areas of work and update their knowledge.     4.1- The way in which my own working practice can affect children and young person development is by working closely with a child to watch them play, listen observe what they are doing write down what you see. Through careful observation you will begin to know your key child, think about what they like doing and what they don’t like doing. Speak to parents and gain information and advice. Once you have taken photos and observations on a child we will then look at the curriculum EYFS and look where the child ages is and what they are and aren’t doing. If a child is struggling to do something we will make simple next steps which link with the eyfs and we will encourage and support the child and put out appropriate toys and materials to help achieve this. The key worker will work together closely with the child and family to achieve the best from their sessions at nursery. Once we c a child’s next step during our weekly planning we will then plan for our own individual key children and plan what there next step is and spend 15 minutes with your key child to help them and encourage to achieve that next step. We also need to make sure that to develop the skills of children we need to make sure there is a variety of activities and toys indoors and outdoors, if a child becomes bored or starts acting out then this shows we need to challenge the child and the way you as a practitioner communicates with the child we need to make sure we are always reflecting on these as this will promote development for the children.…
