After observing the child I must say yes, I do believe the child’s development is typical. While I observed J, I saw him reading a book about colors he was able to name the colors as he pointed with his fingers and followed along with the pictures. I also observed J playing a matching board game which consisted of him counting and rolling the dice. He was able roll the dice; count the numbers on the dice and place the fish on the correct number. Also, when J walked over to the art area he told his teacher what he was going to draw which an airplane because he watched a movie with his mother about airplanes. He walked over to grab color pencils and markers. Jean Piaget’s theory shows the physical and genetic abilities. (Piaget, 1966) theorized

    For my observation study, I asked my cousin, Grace, if it would be alright with her to observe her oldest child. For the purposes of this paper, I will call her Jamie. Jamie is 17 years old, and will be entering her senior year of high school in the fall. Both of her parents have full-time jobs; her father is a salesman and her mother works as a manager at a hardware store. Economically, they do very well. The household has three newer model cars, one for each parent and one for Jamie to share with her 15 year old brother once he gets his driver’s license. They live in a nice house in a newer developed sub-division. Grace and her husband are both born in the United States with roots all over different parts of Europe. I met Jamie at her home and observed her for about an hour in that setting. Afterwards, we walked to the park near their home to address specific questions I had for her. Lastly, I followed up with Grace to answer additional questions that I wanted her to answer after speaking with Jamie. My choice in doing this observation on someone older was made because I feel that so much has changed since I was 17 and I was curious to gain perspective on how teenagers view the world.     Observation Of Child Development

    Each child develops in his or her own ways and that is acceptable. Ann seemed to have a stronger sense of development in some areas over others. Beyond the milestones listed in the back of the textbook, Ann relates to what we discussed in class thus far this semester from chapters eleven and twelve. I noticed a secular trend in physical growth amongst her and her siblings. In the house, there is pictures of her parents and her grandma when they were all much younger, and Ann and her two brothers, Joseph and Michael seem to be taller and heavier than their parents and grandma. Although Ann is extremely active, her eating habits do not seem to be all that healthy. She ate mostly junk food as snacks and her brother said that she can eat a 10-piece chicken nugget and large fry on her own from McDonald’s. She is by no means obese, but as previously stated in the motor skills section, she is above average in weight, and if she continues to eat unhealthy, it could eventually negatively affect her in the future if she is not careful. In terms of motor development and play, Ann demonstrated balance, force, and agility (Berk 2010). She currently plays organized youth sports, and she participated in rough and tumble play with Joseph. Her cognitive development was very strong. Within Piaget’s concrete operational stage for ages 7-11, Ann was capable of decentration and reversibility when she was doing her math homework on Sunday. She also was capable of using rehearsal and organization as memory strategies for the math steps. Her language development was also very strong. She developed metalinguistic awareness, having a strong sense of vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics. Ann’s emotional and social development correlates to the classroom discussions we had on Erikson’s theory of Industry versus inferiority. Ann definitely has a refined and developed self-concept. She knows who she is and she based that off of…
