Language Skills:
Language skills refer to the child’s ability to speak and to communicate so that he/she can understand and be understood by others. It includes grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and inflection. Language arts activities include speaking, listening, pre-reading and pre-writing (Gethers, 2014). Example:

There were many materials available to the children to help them improve in their language skills. Most of the children in the classroom were bilingual, so the teacher Cristian had some words around the room translated in Spanish to help some of the children identify with the object. Also, in the classroom they had a reading and writing area for the children that wanted to sit down and read or write. In addition I saw two different techniques that the teacher used to get the children attention. First one was to raise their hands when they had a question. The teacher would raise one arm to let the children know that they must raise their hand and wait patiently until they are called on. The second one was that the teacher would put one finger over her mouth that indicates that the classroom must quiet down. Santrock states that “Children should be active participants and be immersed in a wide range on interesting listening, talking, writing, and reading experiences” (p. 277 Fine Motor Skills:

Physical abilities involving the hands, and more specifically, the fingers. It involves activities that help a child develop the pincer grasp and prepares them for handwriting (Gethers, 2014). Example:

The children have many available materials in the classroom that help support their fine motor skills. For instance they have a cube box that has different shapes cut out from it. So the children would have to get the individual pieces and put them to the corresponding spot. Also, there was child (Anthony) who was playing with the Lego trying to build something. At first he was having trouble figuring out how to stack them and then he realized that at the bottom of the Legos there were holes that connected to another Lego. It took him time but he was able to figure it out and the outcome was a huge stack of Legos together that he was happy about.Santrock mentions that “three year-olds can build surprisingly high block towers….they recognize the location of a piece fit into, they are not very precise in positioning the piece” (p.242) 3. Gross Motor Skills:

Physical abilities involving large body movements that help children develop and strengthen the large muscles in their arms and legs (Gethers, 2014). Example:
During recess time Sebastian was jumping up and down from the stairs, climbing on the jungle jim, and running around the playground. Sebastian and Luis started to compete with each other to see who can jump higher or who can run faster. Luis would fall behind Sebastian in whatever activity they did. Sebastian was quit an athlete running, climbing, and jumping. According to Santrock “children are even more adventuresome…. It is not unusual for self-assured 5 year-olds to perform hair-raising stunt on practically any climbing object” (p.240). 4. Scaffolding:

A sensitive structuring of the young child’s participation in learning encounters which gives the child just enough help so that they can complete the task on their own (Gethers, 2014). Example:
There was new kid (Lupe) in class today she was very shy and quiet, but she did make a friend Giselle that talked to her and played with her. After free time was over and when of the lights went out Lupe was confused on what they had to do. So Giselle told her “you have to away the toys” and Lupe did. Also when it was nap...
