Background: Child Abuse Child abuse is an enormous issue that affects children from every social class, race and gender. There are two types of child abuse, emotional abuse and physical/sexual abuse. Many children experience both types of abuse. Children like Jay may never even know they are being abused. They think their horrendous treatment is normal. This essay will explore the two facets of child abuse and their victims and perpetrators. While symptoms of physical abuse are more obvious, symptoms of emotional abuse are much more subtle. Some behaviors of abusers include ignoring, rejecting, isolating, exploiting, corrupting, verbally assaulting, terrorizing, and neglecting their child/children. The next was physical abuse, at 17.6%, followed by sexual abuse at 9.1%. The next were Psychological Maltreatment at 9.0% and Medical Neglect at 2.2%. 10.6% was unknown. In the United States, an average of 4-7 children are killed every day due to abuse and neglect. Something needs to be done about child abuse in the U.S. It affects far too many children. It can scar them for life. It can even kill them. The Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) provides services to prevent child abuse, and help those affected by emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect. They need donations to purchase arts and craft supplies, teach personal safety skills, provide moms with baby kits, support crisis assistance help lines, provide group therapy for adults and fund counseling for a child.
