References ……………………………………………………….…...….…….8 Literature Review History of Chick-fil-A: In the small Atlanta suburb of Hapeville in 1946, Truett Cathy opened the Dwarf Grill and later named it Dwarf House. In 1961, Good Brothers Poultry offered Cathy to come up with a chicken sandwich that met up to airline size requirements. He then invented the original Chicken Sandwich in 1964 when his regular customers finally told him “We like it. Don’t change it again.” {text:bibliography-mark} When he was deciding on the name to trade mark, he thought about the chicken filet he used. He then shortened it with a capital “A” at the end to stand for top quality. In 1967 he opened up his first mall restaurant in the Greenbrair Mall in Atlanta. In 1973, he offered $1000 team member scholarships for his employees to further their education. In 1982 it was the 1st fast food chain nationally to sell chicken nuggets.     Chick-fil-A is one of the most successful fast food restaurant establishments in the country. With over 1,300 locations in 37 states in the Southern U.S., they continue to grow the brand by expanding to new territories (Chick-fil-A Company, 2009, para 1). In 2008 Chick-fil-A has seen a 12.17 percent sales increase over the chain’s 2007 performance and a same store sale increase of 4.59 percent (Chick-fil-A Company, 2009, para1). Throughout the years Chick-fil-A has come up with many innovative ideas to continue expanding business and satisfying their loyal customers.     Since the opening of Chick-Fil-A, they have received over 2 billion dollars in sales. The company’s great recipe for success is due to the marketing strategy of product, price, place, and promotion. The additional two P’s, purpose and people, also give a hand in the success. Purpose, guiding the company’s strategy planning process, and people, being key to implementing strategy. For the company, product itself is the fact that the food is made fresh every day, only making just enough inventory to sell. They found that customers reward great product. Since Chick-Fil-A makes their product, using the very best resources they can, the customers are willing to pay full price. Keeping the customers in mind, the restaurant keeps a simple, yet high quality menu. The simple chicken sandwich with the two crucial pickles set the tone for the menu. The restaurant keeps a two-prong approach to their menu, referring to it as a menu of choice, providing nutritional goals of health, (grilled chicken, wraps, salads, etc.) and other items for those less focused on that approach, (milk-shakes, waffle fries, classic chicken sandwich). Keeping these elements has developed a loyal customer following for the food chain.
