Chicken Egg Lab Report
Diffusion and Osmosis
Using “Deshelled”
Chicken Eggs

Introduction
In order for a cell to survive and function, it must maintain an internal steady state of environment in the midst of an ever-changing external environment. This steadiness is provided by the regulation of the movement of materials across its plasma membrane. Since not all substances penetrate the membrane equally well, the membrane is said to be differentially permeable. (IS) Diffusion is the tendency of molecules or ions to move from an area where they are in higher concentration to an area where they are in lower concentration, that is, down or along their concentration gradient. Fat-soluble solutes can diffuse directly through the membrane by dissolving in the lipid. Facilitated diffusion is the passive movement of certain solutes across the membrane either by their binding with a

Bring the materials from the course setup area.
2. After gently blotting, weigh each egg separately to the nearest 0.1g and record the weights in Table 1 at time “0”.
3. Place eggs 1, 2, and 3 into separate culture dishes containing solutions of distilled water 0% sucrose, 14% sucrose, and 40% sucrose respectively.
4. At 15 minutes intervals, that is after 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 minutes, remove the eggs from the dishes; carefully wipe off all excess water, and again weigh each egg separately. Record the weight in Table 1.
5. Replace the egg in the dish for the next interval.
6. After the experiment is complete, return the eggs to their container and each solution to its labeled container.
7. Clean the dishes and weigh boats and return all materials to the setup area,

Cells have kinetic energy. This causes the molecules of the cell to move around and bump into each other. Diffusion is one result of this molecular movement. Diffusion is the random movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration. Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion where water moves through a selectively permeable membrane (a membrane that only allows certain molecules to diffuse though). Diffusion or osmosis occurs until dynamic equilibrium has been reached. This is the point where the concentrations in both areas are equal and no net movement will occur from one area to another.…

My name is Madison Johnson. I am in the 9th grade. I am in Mrs. Logan’s biology class. I am doing my project on “The Magic Floating Egg”. Eggs sink in normal tap water and I am testing whether or not changing the density of water will make the egg float. I was looking at projects on sciencebuddies.org and I saw that multiple people had done this. I am trying to prove that when you add a certain amount of salt to water, it will make it more dense. I took pictures of the results. This information can be useful because we can test the density of salt water versus the density of normal tap water..…

Experiment #1 and #2 are meant to show the processes of Simple and Facilitated diffusion. Both the solutes and water were used to show how they diffuse through a semi permeable membrane. In experiment #1 the process of using the solute and deionized water shows how much of the solute is passed through the membrane. In experiment #2 the rate of facilitated diffusion relied on the amount of carrier proteins available to transport the solute molecules.…

    Egg Lab Report

An egg is a model of a human because the egg has a cell membrane like humans do inside and outside of the body that let things pass through like water. We can use eggs to study the effect of changes in the external environment on the internal environment by having harsh environments like putting the egg in only alcohol and see what happens to the inside of the egg. Diffusion is the movement of a substance down its concentration gradient from a more to a less concentrated area. Meaning if there was more oxygen on one side of the membrane and the membrane was permeable to oxygen, the oxygen would pass through to the side of less oxygen. Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Diffusion and osmosis is important for organisms because our nutrients, oxygen, and etc., need diffusion to go through compartments. I predicted that the more the concentrated the alcohol solution was the mass would increase because I thought the membrane would let alcohol through which would cause the egg to expand.…
