Restaurant Assignment I went to Chicago this weekend and my parents took me out for dinner, we went to Flaco’s Tacos. This is my favorite restaurant I have been going there since I was a kid. My parents know the owner well now, and he greets us at the door to be immediately seated. The first thing you notice when you walk in is how packed the restaurant gets on Sundays. This restaurant isn’t in the best neighborhood however people come from all parts of the city to eat the restaurants famous food. The owner is always working, he walks around talking to the customers asking how the food is and if he could get them anything else. After being seated our waiter greeted us and introduced herself, you can tell that all the works like working in the environment they are in. Also the selection on the menu is huge, I have tried a wide variety of the food on it and have liked it all. Going here a lot I have three favorite meals tacos with beans, eggs mixed with steak and beans, or a burrito. This time I got tacos and beans, while waiting for my food I took a look around to see some of the other customers. I noticed how everyone here enjoys the vibe in the restaurant. I could tell the people next to us were here for their first time, I know the owner noticed this also so he approached them and introduced himself and began to have a conversation with them. Listening in I found out they were from the north side of Chicago and they heard of this place from a family friend. Obviously this place is well heard of if not only its always packed but people recommend it to others. I started listening to the people seated behind us and I turned to see what they looked like, it was an older couple maybe in their seventy’s. You can tell the owner knows them well and that they are loyal customers. The owner talked to them for a while asking about their kids and how the retired life was. This speaks a lot about the owner, he memorizes his returning customer’s names and remembers what they talked about in previous conversations. After the conversation my meal came and it looked great. It only took ten minutes to prepare so it’s fast and well prepared. After everyone at my table go their food I dug in, I was the first finished and I was stuffed. Living in Iowa now I missed Chicago food and I was looking forward to going here all weekend. When everyone finished the owner approached our table once again and asked how it was and asked if we wanted anything else. We got the check and walked out, it was tough to weave through the crowd that was out the door. It’s not a five star restaurant but the customers are treated like it. Needless to say this place is well managed and has outstanding food.

The ones who were able to get seated, didn’t get their food fast enough. So they were displeased. As I observed all customers were no happy. One person at each table were aggravated and it showed on their face. The workers were very nice and pleasant. They would greet and take care of everyone apparently and promptly. When I would look into each of the relationships of each table, I would learn how a son and mother got along. I saw how he cared for her and how well he took care of her. Their nonverbal messages let me know what their relationship was and gave me reassurance that there are great children out…

At the moment when we got there, I saw a place that said “come in to real Mexican food” by just looking at the outside. At the moment I walked in I heard Mariachi music. As we are walking to our table, we could notice the decorations all inside the restaurant that makes people feel like they are part of the Mexican culture. They have mariachi hats, horse shoes, mariachi clothes, Mexican scarfs that are really pretty and colorful. You…

This outing has influenced my view of St. Louis in many ways. Before this outing, I did not know that St. Louis was home to a large number of refugees. As mentioned in class, most of my time is spent in the SLU bubble, so I have never been exposed to the different ethnic cultures within the city. I enjoyed learning about the diversity within St. Louis, and I am excited to explore new ethnic restaurants. Also, this fact about St. Louis resonated with me, due to the fact that Des Moines is also home to many Bosnian refugees. I attended grade school with children who had traveled to America to escape the Bosnian Civil war. In fact, there is a community of Bosnian refugees that live a few streets away from me. As a child, I did not understand the classifications of a refugee or why they choose…

The motivations for the Chinese to come to the United States are similar to most immigrants. These motivations are what most people call "The American Dream." These could be looking for a better life, having a better job, running away from political issues. However, for Chinese these American dreams were not too easy to achieve at first compared to other immigrants. Chinese suffered a lot more obstacles and discriminations because they are relatively small and easy to be targeted on. Even more the legal system passed a law in 1963 forbidding Chinese to testify against white men in court. This anti-Chinese action was most critical in the Pacific Coast; as a result, it caused the dispersion of Chinese that had settled in California to the mid-western and eastern states.(Chicago-Chinatown, 1996)1…

Right in front! Just twenty yards away from Quality Leadership University’s front door, I had one of the most enjoyable gastronomical experiences in my life. It all happened after looking for a nice place to eat when I stumbled upon the Korean restaurant Pasion al Carbon. I must say that Pasion al Carbon is not like other Asian restaurants that we’ve seen in Panama, in which the owners barely speak to you. In fact, the Korean lady in charge of the place, whose name I can’t even pronounce right, provided such a pleasant treatment during my stay. Furthermore, I was able to establish a long conversation with this cheerful lady in which she described in great detail, the wide variety of Korean food she prepares at the restaurant. But from all the…

It was a nice hot summer when my parents decided to a fancy Chinese restaurant, which recently open near our house and since I was 6, I didn’t know much about Chinese food and how there are so many varieties of Chinese food there are. At first I was nervous because of how the place looked, not that it was scary but how the place looked alive by how it was decorated with its brilliant pattern with colors radiating mostly all color of the spectrum. Then we were taken to our table and were given a complimentary drink, which was tasteless and odorless but refreshing. There we many people there and were ordering many varieties of foods, that I have never seen before. Then my…
