PRE-LAB
Title: Density of Metals – Shot Lab Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to find out the density of different metals using their mass and volume. If the volume and mass for the metals Nickel and Copper are found, then we can figure out the density.
Materials:
Metal shot
Plastic rinse bin
Electric Balances
Calculator
Graduated Cylinders
Water
Wire Gauze
Weigh Boats
Pre-lab Questions:
1) The volume of the water is 43.0 mL
2) The volume of the metal shot and the water is 73.0 mL
3) The volume of the metal that was added to the graduated cylinder is 33.0 mL
Procedure:
1. Fill graduated cylinder with 30 mL of water.
2. Put weigh boat onto the scale and press tare.
3. Put 3 scoops of metal 1 onto weigh boat.
4. Record the mass.
5. Pour metal from weigh boat into graduated cylinder.
6. Record the volume of the metal.
7. Find the density of metal 1 for trial 1.
8. Repeat for trials 2-4. (Trial 2=7scoops of metal, Trial 3=12 scoops, Trial 4=15 scoops, Trial 5=18scoops)
9. Empty graduated cylinder and repeat steps 1-8 for Metal 3

Note: I didn’t have enough time to find the density for a second metal so I used someone else’s Data for Metal 3. Error: The density for nickel for the first 2 samples is off. This is probably because the masses were too small to accurately find the correct density.

    Density of Four Metals

In this lab we studied the densities of four different metals using a caliper, a digital scale, and a calculator. Three metals were pure elements like copper, iron, and aluminum. The fourth metal was an alloy which was brass. The purposes of this lab were to demonstrate that different metal elements have different densities, and that alloys have densities somewhere between those elements that compose them. We also calculated the percent errors between the actual densities and the expected densities. The actual density of aluminum was 2.76g/cc with the percent error being 2.67%. The actual density of iron was 7.88g/cc with the percent error being 0.25%. The actual density of copper was 9.07g/cc with the percent error being 1.2%. The actual density of brass was 8.61g/cc with the percent error being 1.9%.…

This is an investigation to find out how much copper is in a brass alloy. The brass alloy we are experimenting on is called Muntz Metal. Muntz metal is 60% copper, 40% zinc and a hint of copper [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muntz_metal] (accessed 4/10/12). Muntz metal was developed as an alternative to expensive, heavy copper. It is comprised of about 60% copper and about 40% zinc, with a small amount of iron. The finished product actually is considered a form of brass, but it has maintained its name of Muntz metal. Granular material is a group of distinct macroscopic particles, composed of grains or particles of solids with interstitial spaces, which are the spaces between the particles. Having spaces between the particles means that there are rooms left for the filling of air or liquid. This concept is applied as to use the filling of liquid to determine the volume of the particles later on.…
