Title: voltaic cell experiment a voltaic cell is a device made from connecting two different metals together and immersing the combined piece into some sort of solution that creates conductive atmosphere , the general purpose of a voltaic cell is to convert the chemical reaction between the metals and the solution into an electrical charge ,
Hypothesis: the voltage produced by magnesium and cupper = the sum of the voltage produced by magnasium and iron ; and iron and cupper
Variables:
Independent variable: one metal use in one voltaic half cell: (half of the redox reaction occurs at each half cell, Therefore, we can say that in each half cell a half reaction is taking place , when the two halves are connect together with a wire and a salt bridge, and electrochemical cell is created )
Dependent variable: Voltage
Controlling variables:
Volume of solution; a higher volume on one side of the cell of the cell would provide more electrons, increasing the potential energy, which increases the voltage.
Surface area of cathode and anode; if these two have different surface area, it should be more electrons could travel one way more than the other ways. To stop this affecting to my result, I will keep the surface areas of the anode and cathode the same.
Another important thing in this experiment is length and width of salt bridge, the size of salt bridge that I use must be same size , I will keep this the same by measuring the pieces of filter paper that form my salt bridge the same with ruler.
Concentration of the solutions has to remain the same as a more concentrated solution contains more electrons that can travel, increasing the potential energy, which increases the voltage. I will measure the concentration of the solutions before the experiment to ensure that they are the same.
Equipment required: * Lead * Zinc * Iron * Silver * Copper * Tin * Aluminum * Magnesium * Silver nitrate solution *
