TITLE
Analysis of Vitamin C in fresh brand orange, pineapple and apple juices.

ABSTRACT
Vitamin C plays an important role in our daily lives as a nutrition for our health. Tropical brand pineapple juice, Twister brand apple juice and Twister orange juice were used to determine for their concentration of Vitamin C contained. The concentration of Vitamin C contained of these fruit juices were identified by using titration. Based on the results, the concentration of Vitamin C contained in these 3 fruit juices were obtained. The conclusion of the experiment is that different fruit juices contain different concentration of Vitamin C which is important in our daily lives.

CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 THEORY/LITERATURE
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in humans as it functions as a cofactor in several vital enzymatic reactions.(1) It is widely known that deficiency of Vitamin C would lead to scurvy in humans. Vitamin C also has other beneficial effects to our body, such as preventing common cold/heart diseases and strengthening human immune system.(4) However, human beings cannot synthesis Vitamin C by themselves and should obtain it from other sources. The richest natural sources of Vitamin C are fruits and vegetables, for example, blackcurrant, blueberry, orange, lime, lemon, strawberry, cabbage and malt. It is noted that Vitamin C can be chemically decomposed under certain conditions, such as heating and oxidation, many of which may occur during the cooking of food.(2)
In general, the recommendation for vitamin C intake in humans is around 60–95 milligrams per day and the maximum upper intake level is 2000 milligrams per day. Vitamin C exhibits remarkably low acute

Some cases Vitamin C has been proven harmful. The only reason we believe that Vitamin C is good for us in large doses is because of a man named Linus Pauling. Linus Pauling was an American chemist, biochemist, peace activist, author, and educator. He was the only person to receive two noble prizes by himself. In the 70's Linus Pauling became obsessed with living forever and since he won two noble prizes the world trusted him. He wrote the same book 3 times, but every time he wrote it he would up the dosage and title how it cures a bigger disease. He claimed in his last book that taking 12,000mg of Vitamin C could increase the enjoyment of life, could control heart disease, cancer, and slow down the process of aging. Pauling took 12,000 mg a day and if cold symptoms appeared, he upped it to 40,000mg a day. In 1994, he died of cancer the very thing he said Vitamin C would cure. Orange juice advertisers ate the Vitamin C statements up. Since the everyone still believes Vitamin C they drink OJ. If you wanted to get Vitamin C you could eat Broccoli or Red Peppers that have twice the Vitamin C and not as much sugar. In conclusion, don't stress about Vitamin C and keep drinking Orange Juice to a bear…

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential component of human nutrition, as it is an antioxidant that the body requires. Having a deficiency in Vitamin C can lead to scurvy, a disease characterized by abnormalities in human bones and teeth. Fruits and vegetables are common sources of Vitamin C, notably oranges and citrus fruits. Cooking and the application of heat destroy the vitamin so such fruits must be raw in order to obtain the benefits from these sources.…

Across the world, it is thought and widely accepted to believe that Orange juice is the cure to many terrible diseases. However, this may not be true anymore. It has been said that Oranges are very high in vitamin C, therefore one should drink it every morning to stay healthy and prevent the symptoms of any diseases. Oranges apparently are “too acidic to justify the worth of drinking every morning for the miniscule amounts of vitamin C it contains” (Dr. Kenny and Henderson). It has been found that orange juice, while it does contain vitamin C, does not contain enough vitamin C to live up to the “super food” standard that was set for it in the past.…

An organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and on the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animals, and biotin and vitamin D are required in the human diet only in certain circumstances. By convention, the term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, or essential amino acids (which are needed in larger amounts than vitamins), nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health but are otherwise required less often. Thirteen vitamins are universally recognized at present.…

Apples have a good claim to promote health. They contain Vitamin C, which aids the immune system, and phenols, which reduce cholesterol. They also reduce tooth decay by cleaning one's teeth and killing off bacteria. It has also been suggested by Cornell University researchers that the quercetin found in apples protects brain cells against neuron-degenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease. An apple a day may not keep any physicians at bay, but apples are very nutritious. They are high in fiber, important for digestive health, and boron, which promotes bone growth. Apples are also rich sources of photochemical, an anti-oxidant found in plants, fruits and vegetables. A raw apple, weighing 138 g with skin, provides 6.3 mg of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. One apple provides roughly 10 percent of your daily recommended allowance for vitamin C. The human body does not produce vitamin C, so we must get it from foods such as apples. One medium-sized apple contains approximately 8 mg of vitamin C. Our bodies use vitamin C to produce collagen, which plays an essential role in the structure of bones, ligaments and tendons. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, vitamin C is an antioxidant and may help reduce your risk of having a stroke or developing cancers of the mouth, vocal cords, stomach and colon. About half of the vitamin C in apples is right under the skin, so don't peel them if you want to get the maximum amount of vitamin C from your apple.…

Nutritional diseases were once the number one cause of death only a century ago, but rarely affect our lives today. The complete lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) characterized by dark purple spots on the skin and rotting gums, a disease called scurvy, took the lives of many sailors up until the mid 1800s when the prevention was discovered. Consequently, British sailors became referred to as ‘limeys’ because of their daily habit of eating limes to maintain their vitamin C levels. Citrus fruits and green plants synthesize a very high concentration of ascorbic acid, and other plants and most all animals can produce some amount as well, except humans. We must rely on our dietary intake to maintain healthy levels of this nutrient.…
