Chemical Basis of Life
BIOLOGY 22
MODULE 1 – Chemical Basis of Life v2.0 * Levels of Organization – biological functions are ultimately based on the properties of atoms and molecules * Subatomic particles – neutrons, electrons, protons * Atoms * Compounds * Complexes of compounds * Organelles – bodies within cells that perform specific functions * Cell * Specific combination of organelles * Can metabolize and reproduce * Least elaborate living structure * Significance of Chemistry/Physics in Biology * Biology based on chemistry * Chemistry based on physics * Important Concept in Chemistry * Matter, Atoms, Atomic Structure * Matter – anything that has mass and occupies space (e.g. solid, liquid, gas, plasma) * Atomic Theory – Dalton * All matter is made of atoms * All atoms are made of subatomic particles * Atoms – units of matter * Bohr – proposed structure of atom (similar to solar system) * Parts of atoms * Nucleus * Proton * Neutron * Electron – in an electron cloud * Important concepts * Electrons are arranged in shells according to energy levels * Filled innermost shell – 2 electrons
Filled outermost shell – 8 electrons * Same number of valence = similar chemical behaviors

* Elements * Pure substances made of one kind of atom * Cannot be decomposed * Compounds / Molecules * Chemical reaction – processes where atoms combine/break with other atoms * Molecule – two or more atoms, may be same atoms (e.g. H2) * Compound – molecule containing at least 2 kinds of atoms (e.g. H2O) * Chemical Bonds * Ionic Bond * One atom gains electrons, one atom loses electrons * Bond strength = 5-10 kcal/mol * Cations – atom that loses electrons (+)
Anions – atom that gains electrons (-) * Covalent Bond * Two or more atoms share electrons * Electrons behave as if they belong to each atom * Bond strength =

Before it was capped, the well 5000 feet (1500 meters) below the sea surface leaked at least 200 million gallons of oil. (Some estimates are far larger.) One tactic BP used was to spray hundreds of thousands of gallons of DISPERSANTS into the gushing clouds of oil and onto surface of the ocean. Dispersants are a mixture of organic solvents and detergents which enable the oil to mix into the water. While this largely succeeded in getting the oil “out of sight, out of mind” by diluting it into a much larger volume of water below the surface, and helped increase of speed of chemical and bacterial breakdown of the oil somewhat, much of the oil is still there, just spread out more, and the dispersants themselves are also quite toxic. The full environmental damage of this spill and its “cleanup” will take years to…

    2. The lowest level of structural organization is the chemical level, an example is atoms combining to form molecules. The next structural level is the cellular level, for example, molecules making up muscle cells. The next level of organization is the tissue level, which can be pictured as multiple similar muscle cells making up a muscle tissue. The fourth level of the structural organization is the organ level, which can represented by several layers of cardiac muscle making up the heart and blood vessels. Next, the heart and blood vessels combine to make up the cardiovascular system, making the 6th level of organization, the organ system level. Finally, all the organ systems in the body combine to make up the organism, completing the final level of structural organization, the organism level.…

The most basic description that is universally understood, would be, that matter is made of atoms. Now in today’s “enlightened” world, this would be too simple of a statement to make categorically. It becomes necessary for us to take into account the advances in atom science and be able to qualify our statement. We must further state, that though matter is made up of atoms, they are no longer the smallest particles of matter. Let us begin a journey through time to be able to appreciate our understanding, of how the concept of the “smallest particle of matter” has changed over time. The first modern day proponents of the atomic theory…

The combination of components found in biological organization forms a system. The phrase “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, relates to the levels of life. With each step in the concept of hierarchy of biological organization, the properties and arrangements in interaction becomes more complex. In addition, new properties are present that would not have been present in previous biological…

The ionic bonds have an attraction between opposite charged ions by one atom, a metal makes a contribution of an electron and becomes a optimistic ion, and when another, a nonmetal received an electron and becomes pessimistic ion. Metal donate electrons and non-metals receives electrons. For example is Na is positive and CL is negative. The covalent bonds share the electrons and they are normally nonpolar. The covalent bonding does not donate or gain electrons such as CH4.…
