Chem Lab Mixture of Solutions
Title: Separation of Mixture of Solids - Experiment 3
Date: 9/21/13

Purpose: This experiment is designed to show the different ways to separate solid mixtures into individual elements. It will also determine whether a substance can be considered “pure” or not, as well as determining the solubility of each mixture in water.

Procedure:
1) Weigh the amount of the mixture on the digital scale. Separate the Iron out by using a magnet to filter out the Iron element.
2) Take the remaining mixture and add 50ml of distilled water to the remainder and combine in a beaker.
3) Heat the mixture and bring to a boil to rid the mixture of salt and benzoic acid. Separate into two cups, and observe how when the mixture is left to cool down in an ice bath, the benzoic acid crystallizes as it decreases in heat.
4) In the remaining cup, heat the sand until the solution is completely dissolved. The sand should be left.
5) Using the cooled solution of benzoic acid crystals, filter out the benzoic acid from the table salt using funnels.
6) Calculate the percentage amount for each solution and net amount, record data in table.

Data Table 1:
Substance
Grams (g)
% of Mixture
Iron fillings(Fe)
1.8g
27.69%
Table Salt (NaCl)
1.9g
29.23%
Sand
1.7g
26.15%
Benzoic Acid
.8g
12.31%
Total:
6.5g
100%

Observations:
1) The iron was easily separated using the magnet to draw out the iron fillings
2) The table salt was calculated using filtration and evaporation
3) The sand was calculated through evaporation
4) The benzoic acid formed crystals after the cooling bath and was obtained through filtration

Questions:
A. How did your proposed procedures or flow chart at the beginning of the experiment compare with the actual procedures of this experiment?
My proposed procedure was a lot more condensed and summarized as to the actual procedure which involved many steps and techniques. Though, my flow chart did produce similar results.

B. Discuss

The results of the experiment show a percent yield of 34.34% for the first trial (Part A), and a percent yield of 84.0% for the second trial (Part B). The methods for both trials were generally the same, so the large difference is attributed to the fact that the beaker broke before the gravity-filtering step in the first trial. The beaker was attempted to be picked up by the beaker tongs, but as the hot solution was being poured into the filter, the beaker slipped out of the beaker tongs and shattered, leaving some of the product unfiltered and thus not accounted for in the final product. Although the methods were generally similar in both steps, the gravity filtration step was skipped over in the second trial, which may have accounted for the missing 16% in trial 2, but may have also accounted for the overall relatively high percent yield for this trial. Luckily, the actual melting point of benzoic acid fit within the recorded average…

To study the affect of pH on a food preservative. Sodium benzoate changed into benzoic acid once the 3 M of HCl was added making it a pH of 2, making the solution acidic. The hydronium ion concentration was high enough that it gave a yield of benzoic acid, which, is very insoluble in water and it formed a precipitate in the solution. The end percent yield was 132.352%, this was due to a few flaws in the experiment. During the filtration process of the experiment the funnel was not working properly and not all the…

Most of the organic substances recovered from organic reactions are impure and require purification to obtain the desired pure product. The extracted benzoic acid still had impurities which can be removed through the process of recrystallization. Recrystallization is a purification technique that relies on the differing solubility of compounds within a mixture separating to form a pure crystalline solid of the desired product. Often the desired compound is present in a larger quantity within the solution. Therefore, a pure sample of this compound can be crystallized from the solution while leaving the impurities dissolved within the solvent.…

The recrystallization of Benzoic Acid was performed to fully master the ability to purify a solid compound. This form of purification technique is especially important in chemical identification, where the melting point of the compound is taken to confirm its purity. In order to perform recrystallization a solubility test much be completed. Four solvents (95% Ethanol, Petroleum Ether, Acetone and distilled water) were used to identify which one is an ideal solvent. An ideal solvent is insoluble in room temperature and soluble in hot solvent. 0.5mL of each solvent were added into four reaction tube with 25mg`of pure Benzoic acid. After careful observation, distilled water fit the requirement. During recrystallization, 0.5 grams of Benzoic acid were added into a 50mL flask with 10 mL distilled water. After performing this experiment, the first crop had a mass of .334 grams with a second crop of 0.0grams. The percent recovery yields 66.8%, which means that according to expected value of 70% this data confirms that the Benzoic is pure. Finally, the melting range was between 120 to 122 degrees which again confirms that the recrystallized Benzoic acid has been purified completely.…

The data can best be interpreted by the fact that the dependent variable is the elements: salt, sand, iron, and wood chip shavings. The independent variable is the techniques: filtration, magnetism, distillation, and using boiling points of water to evaporate. The hypothesis of this experiment was true in which all the processes stated were used and successfully separated the mixture. In the future of this experiment, a way of improvement would be to filter the wood chip shavings more in order for you not to have to use the forceps to pick out every particle of sand. Overall this experiment was a…
