Chem Lab 1 Report
Cydney Kessler Date of Experiment: 6/9/15

Report Submitted: June 10, 2015
Title: Observations of Chemical and Physical Changes
Purpose: the purpose of this lab experiment is that I will be able to decipher the difference between a chemical and physical change. I will be about to tell whether a chemical change has occurred during the experiment or if it was a physical change and I will be able to answer why it is either one.
Procedure: In the lab experiment, I mixed different types of chemicals with different background to see if there was a chemical change, and also to see what type and why that change occurred.

The identification of the melting point of the organic acid was done to find another characteristic of the acid and to test the purity of the recrystallized pure acid. A 2-4 mm layer of unknown sample was placed into a capillary tube sealed on one end. Then the capillary tube was inserted into the side a Bibby Sterlin device. The plateau was set to 200°C on the melting point apparatus. Once the plateau temperature was reached, the sample was watched carefully. When the sample first began to melt and when it was fully melted was recorded. These numbers were the range of the melting point. A slow melting point of the unknown organic acid and a standard sample was completed next. A new plateau was set about 10°C lower than the observed melting point of the unknown sample. This time once the plateau was reached, the heating was no more than 1°C per minute. This gave a much more accurate read of both melting points. If the standard did not melt in the range listed on the label of the bottle, that meant the machine was not working properly. The standard sample and the unknown organic acid melted in their appropriate ranges.…

The purpose of this experiment was used to identify the chemical changes a substance undergoes by knowing some of its chemical properties like (Change in color, producing bubbles and gas, precipitation, conductivity). The aim of today’s lab was to help us identify different households and their components, they contained whether they were acid/ base, because most of the households are based on those solutions like (i.e. Acetic acid = Vinegar = CH3COOH can be used in cooking) or bases solutions like (bleach is applied for cleaning and also to remove dirt’s). And to identify those substances we can do testify them by observing the change in litmus paper (i.e. acids when the dissolve in the solution they produces Hydronium ions H3O+…

A solution of a metal carbonate with chemical formula X2 CO3 was prepared by dissolving 2.80g of the solid in 250mL of water. 20.00mL aliquots were titrated with a 0.150M H2 SO4 solution, using methyl orange as the indicator. The average titre was found to be 10.8mL. (Source: Heinemann Chemistry)…

The purpose of this lab was to differentiate chemical changes from physical changes. During the separation lab we were given a test tube with Styrofoam, sand, salt, and Iron fillings in it, our goal was to issolate each component from the other. We were given certain tools and materials to help us figure out how to divide the components, therefore creating our lab. Doing this lab helped us figure out what component used physical change and which used chemical change, it also showed us which one was an element and compound. Each compound was separated differently, we were given a test tube with Styrofoam, iron fillings, sand, and salt in it. Automatically me and my partner knew that water would pull the Styrofoam up because it's…

    2. Although, in this lab I only noticed two changes which resulted in a positive test result. The changes were color change and precipitation forming in the solution. For example, well water changed color after mixing potassium thiocynate and it indicated there were potassium ions in well water. Precipitation formed in the solution when potassium chloride was mixed with silver nitrate and indicated there were chloride ions in silver nitrate and it resulted in chemical change.…

For this laboratory experiment I followed the detailed procedures outline in the Labpaq manual by P. Jeschofnig, LP-0125-CK-01. (Jeschofnig, Peter., Ph.D., "Physical and Chemical Properties." General College Chemistry. Englewood, CO: Hands on Lab Inc., 0. 65-71. Print.) First, I followed all safety measures as outlined therein. After assembling all the necessary supplies and equipment needed to conduct this experiment, I began the lab experiment by identifying physical properties : the color and odor for each substances (a, b, c, d, e, f & g) by observing and smelling each substance then notating my findings. (See excel worksheet which identifies each substance tested in this experiment.) I then added each chemical a, b, c, d, e, f & g separately to a test tube and tested the effect of heat by holding it over a fire source. I observed to see if there was any change in color, conduction of heat or gas. Second, I added each chemical separately a, b, c, d, e, f, g to a test tube and notated the effect of cold water. Third, I added water to each chemical separately a, b, c, d, e, f, g to a test tube and notated the effect of hot water by holding it over a fire source until a boiling point was reached. I noted any observations observed such as bubbling, heat, conduction, gas etc. Fourth, after allowing the solution to cool down from the prior step, I tested the pH of each chemical using red…

Experiment 14 Topic Purpose Procedure : Qualitative analysis : To determine the cations and anions of inorganic substances : (a) Solids KA1 and KA2 are simple salts. Carry out the following experiments with solid KA1 to identify its cation and anion. (b) You are then required to carry out a few experiments to identify the cation and anion present in solid KA2. In all the experiments, the reagent should be added gradually until no further change is observed. Deduce what you can about KA1 and KA2. Observations should include details of colour changes, precipitates, and tests on gases evolved. Tests on KA1 Test (a) Add dilute hydrochloric acid to a small amount of solid KA1, then warm gently. (b) Dissolve solid KA1 in distilled water and filter. Use separate portions of the filtrate for the following tests. (i) Add aqueous sodium hydroxide, then in excess. (ii) Add aqueous ammonia, then in excess followed by aqueous ammonium chloride. (iii) Add aqueous iron (III) chloride, then warm. (iv) Add aqueous silver nitrate, followed by dilute nitric acid. (v) Add aqueous disodium hydrogen phosphate. (vi) Add aqueous potassium chromate (VI) followed by dilute hydrochloric acid. Observation Solutions smells like vinegar. Deduction Solution contains CH3COO- ions.…
