Charlie Gordon In Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could increase his or her intelligence? In the story “Flowers for Algernon,” by Daniel Keyes a man with a very low IQ of 68 can have this done. This man is 37 years old and can hardly spell. This mans name is Charlie Gordon and he is getting an operation to make him temporarily smarter. Charlie should get this operation because of many different reasons but the ones that will be gone over are as following, Charlie is tired of being dumb and wants to be smart, he gets a better job, he realized that he loved his teacher Mrs. Kinnian.

To start it off is Charlie is tired of being dumb. In the story Charlie says “All my life I wanted to be smart and not dumb.”(Keyes,55) This shows that he doesn’t like being dumb

In the story we learn that Charlie says that he quits his job at Donnegans Plastic Box Company. In the story it says that Donnegan suggested that he leave, if not he would have more than likely been fired due to the fact that there was a petition signed by 840 people that he be fired so he really didn't have a choice. Now to his new job. Charlie is given his own lab and has been given permission to go on with research. The story also tells us that Charlie rarely sleeps but when he does it is in his lab where he makes more money because it is a regular salary.

Furthermore with my claim, Charlie realizes that he loves Miss Kinnian. “I don’t understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss Kinnian is.”(Keyes,70) This evidence from the texts shows that Charlie is developing feelings for Miss Kinnian. Also the text says “I think from the beginning I had the feeling that she was an unreachable genius-and very very old. Now every time I see her she grows younger and more lovely.”(Keyes,71) This piece of text shows that he is really starting to love her and he thinks that she is beautiful and smart.

In the end the final result is clear that Charlie should have gotten the operation. The fact that Charlie is tired of being dumb, he gets a better paying job, and he learns to love are all things that help support my claim. At last the argument of whether Charlie should or shouldn’t have is concluded because of greater wins than

Before Charlie’s operation, his emotions are stable. He is usually calm but sometimes confused depending on the situation. Charlie writes in Progress Report 4, “I told her how can you get that thing from cards that somebody spilled ink on and photos of pupil you don’t even know. She looked angry and took the pictures away. I don’t care,” (6). Charlie’s emotion during this time is calm, a stable emotion. Compared to his feelings after the operation, this is normal. Yet, some people might say that Charlie’s emotions are not as strong as they need to be. Having strong emotions is not always beneficial. Charlie notes in one of his progress reports, “It made me angry with myself and I pulled back to my side of the seat and stared out the window. I hated her as I had never hated anyone before,” (80). His description of his feelings shows his rash and strong reactions. This event takes place after the operation. Thus proving the operation affected Charlie’s emotions in a dreadful…

One common argument some readers have throughout is that by having the surgery, Charlie had seen that the world could be very cruel in many ways, but I oppose this stating that even though he has faced many cruel times he has mostly had many beneficial times because of it. For instance, by having the surgery, Charlie was able to make more friends that were much more understanding of him and that didn’t bully him like his previous “friends” Joe and Frank. So as with that, others still oppose and say that he was better off without the surgery because with having the surgery when the effects of it wore off his I.Q. would be decreased less than what his original I.Q. was before the surgery. As that may be true while he had the effects of the surgery he was able to use it to his advantage by making a contribution to science by discovering the Algernon-Gordon effect which would be able to help future researchers on the topic of artificial intelligence and the human…

To conclude, the operation that Charlie went through in “Flowers for Algernon” was nothing but bad. Charlie did have a couple weeks to feel almost normal (almost meaning he was smarter than everyone around him, making him feel less normal) but that ended quite quickly, possibly killing him. Charlie even came close to suicide during his downward spiral. This is my opinion on the theme for “Flowers for…

Charlie is better off smart when it comes to how others treat him. Charlie works at a box factory. During his time there, he has made a few “friends.” I wouldn’t really consider them friends, reading about how they treat him before the surgery. They would take him to the town bars to get him drunk. They would trip him, push him, and more. The sad thing about it, was that Charlie thought it was just normal friendly fun. He would laugh along with them. When somebody else would mess up on something, their action was referred to as “pulling a Charlie Gordon.” Charlie didn’t realize that he was actually…

(Keyes, 209)Before Charlie gets smarter, his friends had used him for entertainment. They had given him alcohol, and they had used him like a tool. They told him to show his job of cleaning toilets to girls. “Charlie is a card when he is potted,” said Joe.
