    Laurie's 'Schadenfreude'

    • 542 Words

Schadenfreude is a word borrowed from the Germans and used by the English from the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Though the word is obsolete, it is by far the best word to describe a certain trait of Laurie, that of malicious joy. Having malicious joy as a character trait must be backed up by sufficient evidence, and that I have. Why else would someone at the age of 5 leave his parents without a goodbye, hit the teacher, kick the teachers friend, tell another little girl to say explicit words, and finally lie about it all to his parents? This conclusion could be refuted by a simple, “but, the teacher made him colour with the wrong colour” or “but, the teachers friend made him exercise”. I don't believe that Laurie hit the…

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Laurie lied about who Charles was to be able to talk to his parents about something without them knowing that Charles did not exist and the he was the one committing all of the acts that were claimed to be Charles. Laurie had lied about Charles in every scenario that had truly been him, both positive and negative, this means that Laurie had lied to his parents quite a lot, making himself a rather large liar. One of these many instances occurred when “Charles yelled during story hour and hit a boy in the stomach and made him cry.”(347), once again lying about who had really completed those acts. Even so, Laurie’s mother still found out about Charles at the PTA meeting when “ No one mentioned Charles” (349), and after confronting the teacher learned that Charles did not exist and that Laurie had committed all of the misconducts. This reason shows that Laurie is a liar as well as a misbehaving attention seeker and shows how he had…

Lying sticks out in the story “Charles” as a main impact on other characters. Laurie comes home everyday with a new lie to tell to his parents. Consumed by the imaginary figure “Charles” the family circles their life around him. For example Jackson writes, “With the third week of kindergarten Charles was an institution in our family; the baby was being a Charles when she cried all afternoon; Laurie did a charles when he filled his wagon full of mud and pulled it through the kitchen; even my husband, when he caught his elbow in the telephone cord and pulled telephone, ashtray, and a bowl of flowers off the table” (75). This explains how the family thinks that whenever something bad is done it is an example of Charles. The family points anything…

Laurie. I believe his behavior should be blamed on his parents. Laurie is used to giving his parents attitude without any punishment. Since he had his treatment at home, he would feel the same. For example, on page 1 “Laurie slid off his chair, took a cookie, and left, while his father was still saying ‘See here young man”. This might have given him the mindset that he could do the same with the teacher, ignoring her instructions.…
