Devoted and Helpful We all have that one person whom we regard highly of. That person we look up to as a role model. But what is a role model? A role model would be someone who is devoted in most aspects of life to achieve success in the future and always willing to be help usually not caring what the task is. We do not necessarily see this person as particularly perfect but just a good goal of whom we hope to become someday. My sister Priscinda is my role model and she has these traits that I find admirable: being devoted and helpful. Why is being devoted and helpful qualities seen in someone whom we should regard highly of? The reason being is that being devoted is someone who is very loyal and loving that one person who has dedicated there time to another. Being devoted means commitment, putting others needs before oneself, trusting one another. Can we imagine a life without devotion? No commitment, no follow-through, no grounding in what really matters. Maybe that’s how most people live – losing their center in the face of compelling people and situations, not taking the time to reflect on what is important to themselves. Along with devotion you must also be helpful, we were all taught to help others when we were young. Helpful is being able to help others without expecting anything in return and just doing it out of the kindness of a person’s heart. It is a value that parents and teachers have been sharing for ages. Yet, sometimes we get so focused in our own world that we do not always go out of our way to help others— we just have too much on our minds and too much on our plates to even bother what others are doing. Being devoted and helpful is of such importance in a person because without these people we would not have anyone to look up to and we would live in a selfish world.
Moreover,
one person whom I know that exemplifies these traits best is my older sister Priscinda. She

She is portrayed as an old lady who has too much pride and wants to be in the know of every tiny piece of gossip in town. In the beginning of the story, it gives the readers the impression that she was a sweet old lady who takes much pride in her rose bush and enjoys the town gossip too much. Ms. Strangeworth comes off as prideful, intrusive and blunt. Ms. Strangeworth was portrayed as prideful throughout the story when she took so much pride in her rose bush which had been passed down to her by her family. She explained to everyone, including tourists who just pass through the town about how she inherited this magnificent rose bush and the first house ever built on Pleasant Street by her grandfather. She believed that she deserved much appreciation, honor and gratitude from the people of the small town because of her grandfather. Her when the town decided to put up a statue of Ethan Allen instead of her grandfather, she was disappointed and muttered “ but it should have been a statue of my grandfather. There wouldn’t be a town here at all if it hadn’t been for my grandfather and the lumber mill.” This shows the readers that she believed that the town was her’s and no one else’s. In the text, it claims that Ms. Strangeworth would not give out or share her flowers with anyone else because she believed that the roses belonged within her household. “.. it bothered Ms. Strangeworth to think of people wanting to carry them away, to take them into strange towns, and down strange streets.” Even when people requested for her beautiful roses for the town’s church, she would refuse. “When the new minister came, and the ladies were gathering flowers to decorate the church, Miss Strangeworth sent over a great basket of gladioli.” This tells us that she is very protective of her roses and would not even spare a…

Imagine attempting to follow in the footsteps of the consummate role model, with unique and powerful qualities which you aspire to attain. This may be the most difficult task of looking up to a role model. All role models are the ideal people you want to follow, your idea of how you want to be in the future. To me, a role model is someone in my life that has influenced me in a positive way. They have helped shape the way I am in the present and make me what I will be in the future. Role models are the people that I can look to for advice in a hard situation and know that they will give me words of wisdom. A role model should be sincere, and truthful, and not out for their own good but for the good of others. For me, a role model should be older, as that person will be more experienced and have deeper insight. It would be pointless to have a role model who knows less than me. For me, that person was the one and only, Bruce Lee. His skills and abilities made up part of who…

As a man, it is nearly impossible for me to truly know what a woman would desire in a positive role model. Being a man in a "mans ' world" I can only see and try to understand the struggles that many woman go through today. To me an ideal role model for modern women would be, someone who can overcome the obstacles of a patriarchal society while not compromising their personal ethics and morals. Role models need to have both strength and sensitivity while dealing with adversity. The Greek goddess Athena is a powerful role model for the women of today by embodying all of these virtues.…

The story Just Lather, That’s All by Hernando Tellez, is about making the right decisions. It’s about a barber who must face the choice of taking revenge by killing Captain Torres, an executioner or to provide him with the perfect shave and thus preserve his job and his reputation. While he condemns himself to an uncertain future, he finally makes the right decision. “The Barber” is displayed as a heroic character by portraying intelligence, honour and morality. Firstly he shows intelligence, by considering the consequences to the choices he is facing. He had many chances to kill Captain Torres however his moves were slow as his thoughts: “I would have to flee, leaving all I have behind, and take refuge far away, far, far away. But they would follow until they found me. “Captain Torres’ murderer. He slit his throat while he was shaving him, a coward.” And then on the other side. “The avenger of us all… He was the town barber. No one knew he was defending our cause.”” (Tellez 51) His intelligence is evident throughout the story due to his attempt at being congruent instead of just killing the Captain for revenge. It is also obvious that “The Barber” is an honourable man which further ascertains his heroism. He takes great pride in what he does and seems to be very proud and happy about his job: “But I don’t want to be a murderer, no sir. You came to me for a shave. And I perform my work honourably… I don’t want blood on my hands. Just lather, that’s all.” (Tellez 51) It took him a lot of effort to make the choice he did – to not lose his job and his reputation as the best barber. Another way in which he portrays heroism is through morality. He realized that killing does not bring peace and instead aggravates anger among others and thus increases the problem: “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Nothing. Others come along and still others, and the first ones kill the…

Hi, my name is Marcie and I just recently turned fifteen a few weeks ago. I’m a sophomore at a new school, and I have one sister who is a sophomore as well, but she goes to college. I moved from the big city of New York to the warm and sunny Huntington Beach, California this past summer because my mom’s job transferred her out here. Being the new kid at a different school can be very stressful at times, everyone already has their group of friends, and I sometimes feel like the outcast. It is only the first week of school but I was hoping at least one person would have talked to me, but no one seems to like new kids. I never had a huge group of friends at my old school, but I did fit in with the few kids I hung out with. My mom just keeps telling me people need to warm up to me and see who I really am, but how are they supposed to see the real me when all they do is ignore me? I’ve tried to spark up a conversation with some of the students but none of them ever seem interested so I just sit quietly in the back of the room and no one seems to notice me.…

Lakunle is the schoolteacher of the village. He deeply admires Western culture and seeks to emulate, often to comically inadequate effect. He is portrayed by Soyinka as clumsy in both actions and words, throwing together phrases from the Bible and other Western works in hope of sounding intelligent. He is "in love" with Sidi, but has not married her because she demands that he pay the traditional bride price, something he refuses to do. Initially we chalk up this refusal to his Western beliefs, and the belief that women shouldn't be bought and sold, but later in the play he reveals his true self - when Sidi's virginity is taken away, he leaps at the chance to bypass the bride price by saying that she can't really expect him to pay the bride price now that she's no longer "pure". He represents one extreme of the play's central pendulum - the Western values.…
