Character Analysis: Tough Room
‘Tough Room’

Doing insult comedy for a living had always been dicey. When Jake began in comedy, he had to deal with political correctness bullshit, and now, thirty-five years later, he’s dealing with the reality of sentient level androids sitting in the audience. They say they’re trying to assimilate, but because of deregulation, and autonomous learning, a lot of these androids have a superiority complex and view the 'Laws of Robotics’ as optional.

As the MC warmed the crowd, Jake stood backstage. Above him, a shadow-drone spotlight hovered several feet above his head. In the background, a floor-to-ceiling hologram of his 2030 tour poster ‘Go F**k Yourself’ filled the space. Checking his wrist monitor, his vitals, were their normal high. Physical fitness had never been Jake’s

A confident Jake strutted from one side of the stage to the other and did twenty minutes of insults on the human condition.

Feeling invincible, Jake asked, “With a show of hands, how many cyborgs are here?” Over half the audience raised their hands. Some waving their CereBio prosthetics, others shouted out their various bionic internal organs. Jake raised his hand, “Hell yeah! Contrary to popular belief, I do have a heart — it’s a bionic one and it’s amazing. When things turn to shit, we slap on new body parts. We’re hi-tech versions of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head'.” His comedy set couldn’t have gone better — until this joke — “Listen up, did you know that androids family tree, trace back to an illicit schtupping between a Furby and a Roomba.” Big laughs again, but a lot of booing and jeering from androids. Jake hated boos. Instead of moving on, he made a big mistake. “Looks like some of you forgot to switch on your 'sense of humor' emulators, not mentioning names, but...” Holding his hand to the side of his mouth, he whispered, “A-N-D-R-O-I-D-S.” More laughs, a lot of murmuring, but the boos were

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

    Critique of Family Guy

As Antonia Peacocke quotes in her essay, “The show Family Guy is one of the first in history that has been canceled not just once, but twice” (300-301). The show was brought back in August 2000 and again in July 2001 when fans could not get enough of the adult cartoon. As well as being a fan favorite, Family Guy is also a controversial topic for critics all over the world. In the essay, “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious”, Antonia Peacocke analyzes the show and gives her reasons why it is not all negative and crude humor. Antonia Peacocke is a student at Harvard University. She is also a National Merit Scholar, and has won awards such as the Catherine Fairfax MacRae prize for Excellence in both English and Mathematics. She was asked to write this essay specifically for the book They Say, I say: with readings. The Peacocke’s main point of her entire essay is that she wants to let readers know why Family Guy is not a bad show, in her and others opinions, but one that has been criticized for solely bringing entertainment. Peacocke does a successful job in portraying this, but it is not completely clear until the end, where her thesis can be found. The very last sentence of the essay is her thesis: “While I love Family Guy as much as any fan, it’s important not to lose sight of what’s truly unfunny in real life – even as we appreciate what is hilarious in fiction” (Peacocke 308). Peacocke’s thesis could be a little more clear throughout her essay, therefore, I do not feel it is as effective as it could be, but the author clearly states her argument and presents her case.…

"Some of your speculations have been true, I did blow up the engine so that this ship will not be going anywhere," he said. "Why would you want to do that?" someone asked in the crowd. "Because I happen to hate all anthros with a, shall we say strong passion," he said. After he finished the sentence, two other humans brought out someone with a sack on their head. "This is your captain," he said, "Let this be an example to you all." He proceeded to pull out a gun and shot the captain in the head. There was a collective gasp from the crowd. "Soon this will be each and every one of you, one by one," he said pointing at the crowd. "So take my advice, and run for your life, as that is what you will be doing," he said and in a flash of smoke, the three of them disappeared from the stage leaving everyone in…

Laughter is an experience unlike any other and it is hard to define as it is hard to perceive. But why I find something funny might not be the same reasons why others find such an idea, act, or situation funny or not funny. A sketch aired on May 10th of 2014 titled “Bikini Beach Party” via the television sketch series known as Saturday Night Live. This sketch was a parody, or imitation with an extreme exaggeration of the movie “Gidget” in 1959 in which a “girl-midget” discovers how to surf and also falls in love for the first time. However, I did not find the sketch “Bikini Beach Party” comical at all because, the lack of actual sketch writing, the utterly wrong dark humor, and my ability to indicate what was going to happen the entire time.…

We as humans, take delight in trying to figure out what the people around us are like. We analyze what they do, what they say, what they've done and offer predictions as to what they will do. As we read a novel we do the same, even though a character isn't living, we think and respond to them as if they were an acquaintance. Character analysis is taking a person's actions, thoughts and feelings and critically assessing who they are. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, we see Slim, although not a central character, of great importance to the story. Steinbeck portrays him as a thinker, "His ear heard more than was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but of understanding beyond thought."…
