Character Analysis Of Jealousy In John Knowles 'A Separate Peace'
John Knowles’ A Separate Peace is a beautifully written novel with a truly intriguing plot. However, the one thing I found disappointing was the absence of relatable characters. My lack of sympathy towards the characters made my reading experience feel almost like a chore. Out of all the characters, the one I disliked most was ironically the protagonist, Gene Forrester. Being friends with Gene seems like an awful position to be in. Gene possesses a variety of flaws which include jealousy and his tendency to act too quickly. These traits are displayed in various parts of the novel. Gene first shows signs of jealousy as early as chapter two where he says “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying

In A Separate Peace and Dead Poets Society, some of the characters in the book seem like others in the movie. Gene, one of these characters, in the Separate Peace, relates to Tom in Dead Poets Society, and Phineas or Finny, in the Separate Peace, relates to Neil, in Dead Poets Society. Gene thinks he is at fault with anything he is involved in where something bad happens, and Tom thinks he is worth less and bad at everything. Gene and Tom both look down at themselves. Gene and Tom’s parents are uncaring. Gene talks but mainly only to Finny. Tom only talks to Neil, when he talks to others he is embarrassed and usually quiet. They are both quiet except to their roommate Finny or Neil. Gene was upset when finny fell off the tree and shattered…

In “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles the reader is left with the question, did Gene Forrester jounce the branch, crippling his roommate in the process, on purpose or accident, trapped in their minds? In 1942 during WW II, Gene Forrester began attending a school in New England called Devon. At Devon, Gene soon finds out his roommate, Phineas also known as Finny, was an extraordinary athlete, quite manipulating and able to talk himself out of any kind of trouble or responsibilities he may have had. This caused Gene to become filled with jealousy and competitiveness because he believed Finny was trying to stay “ahead” of him. This is why the essay will discuss Gene’s jealous and competitive personality which could lead the reader to believe…

    1) The main character of the book, A Separate Peace, is Gene Forrester. He is in the senior class at Devon. He is widely known as the smart student who is always on time to class and always does his school work. Gene is a good choice as the main character of this book, but if the author would have chosen Finny as the main character, the book would have been different. Finny leaves Devon for an amount of time because he breaks his leg. Therefore, if he was the main character, the book would not have been placed at Devon the whole time, it would have been placed at Finny's house for a short amount of time. The reader would have also been able to see what Finny was thinking when he first broke his leg and when he did it a second time. The two characters are similar, in the fact that, they both would not be where they are today without their friendship. They are also both very competitive with each other. Gene and Finny are different, in the fact that, Gene is shy while Finny is very outgoing. Finny is focused on athletics while Gene is focused on academics.…

Through out the novel, A Separate Peace, by Jonathan Knowles, a conflict between innocence and guilt is revealed. Gene Forrest, the narrator of the story returns to his school Devon, thirty years later to face the haunting memories of a past love-hate relationship. Though many people would argue the fact that Gene's character was not redeemed by the end of the novel, I on the other hand personally hold the opinion that Gene's character was.…

Finny and Gene’s relationship in A Separate Peace rotates from being close friends to not friends, and disliking each other. In the story, Finny says, “We go together, a double jump” (59). This shows that Finny is pushing Gene to be more like him. This also shows that Finny could be trying to make Gene a better person, but ends up pushing him away instead. As one example, Finny argues, “I didn’t know you had to study,” (58). This shows that Gene doesn’t share everything with Finny, and maybe Finny is distracting Gene from other work. This also shows that this might have been the first tiny step of jealousy that led to their friendship ending. The story began with them as friends, but it ended with them as enemies, in a sense of speaking…

In A Separate Peace, Gene Forrester is the narrator of the story. The book is written of the events that take place in his memory of his high school years he recalls from fifteen years earlier. Gene narrates the book in first person point of view, describing everything from his perspective and as he remembers them. Sometimes during the book it is difficult to keep up with the narrator as sometimes he seems to be talking as the younger gene as if the events he is recalling are happening as he speaks. Also, because we are only getting gene’s perspective, we don’t know whether everything that happens between the boys is exactly how it happened. It’s kind of like if a brother and sister were in some kind of trouble they each would twist around the story to make themself look better or the other look worst. This makes Gene as a narrator unreliable.…

Paranoia, betrayal, competition; two boys by the names Gene and Phineas fight for the number one spot in their friendship. Yet there a slight plot twist, this is all an illusion in Gene’s mind. In the intriguing novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene’s ulterior motives disrupt the healthy friendship both he and Phineas contain. This type of mind shows a difference between Gene’s and Phineas’s character. Even throughout this story, principles of contrast are shed to reveal one’s true characteristics.…

“It was hypnotism. I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn’t help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.”-Gene (page 25). In the novel, “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, Gene and Finny had an underlying rivalry in their friendship. Throughout the story, Gene always felt there was a competition between himself and Finny, even on small things like sports and school. Gene’s jealousy and rivalry against Finny’s innocence put Finny’s life in danger and his belief of Finny being the “enemy” caused Finny’s death.…

"A Separate Peace" takes place during World War II in 1943, a time of great uncertainty and changing lifestyles but the danger of this war never really seems to come near Devon. So does this terrible environment and events affect the characters of a Separate Peace or just provide a safe and surreal environment for the characters? The war in a Separate Peace may not directly affect the characters for the majority of the novel but we see its affects on the characters actions indirectly and it ends up greatly affecting the final outcome of the novel. The war also changes the characteristics and attitudes of certain characters of the novel, causing them to adapt and change to create a sort of defense against the impending threat of enlistment in…

Senera the Younger said, "Life is neither a good nor an evil: it is a field for good and evil." This quote shows that when people go through life, it is not good or evil because it is a choice to be chosen. People are put in the field of good and evil to figure out where they are supposed to stand in life. Jealousy is shown most in this novel from Gene towards Finny in many different ways. Gene was a pessimistic thinker and he always saw the worst of things. When Gene showed guilt he did many things to show that he was feeling that way by trying to be like Finny. In the novel, A Separate Peace, Gene is inherently evil because he shows jealousy, pessimism, and guilt.…

People all over the world commit the crime of blackmail. Blackmail is any payment extorted by intimidation, as by threats of injurious revelations or accusations. These payments can be such things as money, sexual favors or favors in general (nonsexual). Blackmailers have different ways they present the blackmail and each blackmailer has their own reason as to why they are blackmailing the person in the first place. Some do it out of jealousy and some just get enjoyment out of this particular crime. Why? Some believe that they have vendettas and others believe they may have some kind of mental illness. Mental illness can cause anyone to do thing they would not normally do and/or are not proud of. In almost every case the blackmailer…
