Character Analysis Of Guy Montag In Fahrenheit 451

Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books in a 24th-century American city. In Montag’s futuristic books are banned and are burned when discovered, Montag has no hesitancy when fulfilling his responsibilities. One night when walking home, Montag encounters a girl named Clarisse. Clarisse is completely opposite from anyone he has ever met. Upon the two meeting, Clarisse makes him realize the vacancy in his life. Afterwards, Montag encounters disturbing events. First, his wife attempts suicide. Subsequently, he receives a call about an old lady with a stash of hidden books. Feeling unsatisfied with life, Montag searches for solutions in the stash of books he has collected from the fires. Failing to show up to work, the chief of the fire department, Beatty, pays Montage a visit to his house. Beatty explains that it is normal for firemen to get curious about what is in the books. Beatty tells Montag that firemen can bring a book home and have 24 hours to read it and it has to be turned in to be burned. Seeking for help to understand the context of the book Montag turns to an English professor for help. When Montag returns to work, they receive a call stating that another stash of books was found. Arriving at the place, Montag quickly realizes it is his home. After destroying his home, Montag becomes a fugitive but successfully escapes the city and become a refuge with “the Book People.”
I believe that the psychoanalytic approach fits this novel because many psychological emotions that author had is being expressed within the characters and underneath the literal meaning of character dialogue and events.
