Atticus finds our why people do the things they do before judging them. Bob Ewell was mad at Atticus so he went and spit at him. Atticus, being a good person and father doesn’t lash out on him, but walks away. Another thing is when the town talked bad about him for defending Tom. He was doing what was right and the town disgraced him and talked about him but he still didn’t get mad at anyone. Jem cut off the tops of all Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. Any “normal parent” of that time would beat Jem for doing this. Atticus is different though, he knows that it is not right to hurt the children even if they deserve it. Atticus makes Jem’s punishment for cutting off the flowers reading to Mrs. Dubose. Even though Jem and Scout don’t know it at the time, they are helping her get over her Morphine addiction, which makes up for it. If Atticus beat Jem for this, Mrs. Dubose might not have gotten the help from Jem and Scout and she might not have gotten over her addiction.
