Character Analysis: Into The Wild, By Jon Krakauer
Chris McCandless Cool or a Fool Tramping is too easy with all the money. My days were more exciting when I was penniless and had to forage around for my next meal (Krakauer 33). Chris McCandless, son of wealthy parents, graduates as top student. However instead of going to college and getting a career, he chooses to give all his money to charity, get rid of his possessions and set out on a journey to the alaskan wilderness. There is a debate whether Chris McCandless is a hero or coward. In the book, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless is a fool because he left his parents without telling them, did not accept anything from anyone, and he was not ready for the obstacles he was faced with in the wild. This viewpoint is incorrect because even though he was happy he was still really dumb for going out there to die without any food or good clothes to actually survive with. In the book Chris explains he needs help in a letter he wrote saying, “S.O.S. I need help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out here. I am all alone, this is NO JOKE. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening, thank you, Chris McCandless” (Krakauer 12). He could have found happiness somewhere else instead of going into the wild and setting out there to die. In the story, Chris burns his money and leaves his car stranded in the middle of nowhere because he thought he did not need it anymore. Which was really dumb of him because he could of had a better chance at survival if he did not get rid of those things. It shows how Chris was not prepared to go out in the wild. He could have found happiness somewhere else instead of running away from his problem by going into the wild. As one can see through multiple examples of Into the Wild, there is a debate whether Chris is a hero or coward.
