Character Analysis: I Am Number Four
Music has been known as a universal language that creates a profusion of knowledge and understanding between others. In this case, I will be using music to connect different characters in the novel I am Number Four, and show how they have changed and shaped themselves through the first portion of the book. Some of these characters are John, an alien trying to survive on Earth after his planet gets destroyed, Henri, John’s guardian and protector working on Earth towards the ultimate goal of saving their home planet, and Sarah, an average high school girl who will soon find out she got herself into a situation most would think impossible.
When John Smith is first introduced as a main character, he is thought to be a simple kid that won’t do anything that doesn’t follow his strict guideline of

Though John and Sarah feel an automatic connection the possibility of anything happening to them when Sarah’s ex-boyfriend and school bully Kevin continuously threatens John. Sarah eventually calls out Kevin with a mindset similar to the lyrics from “Room for all of us” by The Mowgli’s, “And if we stop to look around, there’s room for all of us. So we’ll find out, there’s love in all of us.” “QUOTE”, this is not the only time when Sarah decides to stand up for others. When Kevin steals John’s phone and fills his locker with manure, she calls him out and steals the phone back. After Kevin continually teases John in attempt to prove that he is more dominant, it pushes her away and into John’s arms. This makes Henri nervous however, because since the Mogadorians could catch up with them at anytime John and Henri need to be prepared to drop everything and leave at a moments notice. This may complicate things later in the story but so far it seems the book and the song has the same theme of wanting peace and happiness in a bleak

Robertson Davies' Fifth Business explores the nature of physical appearance in relation to religious aptitude. Through the characters Liselotte Vitzliputzli, Padre Ignacio Blazon, and the narrator and protagonist, Dunstan Ramsay, Davies shows the correlation between explicitly physically ugly characters and their spiritual and religious enlightenment. Davies draw special attention to the physical appearances of these characters in his intense descriptions of them, using extreme depictions such as Dunstan's comparison of Padre Blazon to a theatre costume (p.162) or Liesl to a “Swiss gargoyle” (p. 214), to emphasize the vitality of their anatomy. Padre Blazon and Liesl go on to play an inescapably essential role in Dunstan’s spiritual…

He is stuck in the middle of the society, the life, of fulfilling expectations and the life where he has his own freedom. His parents put immense pressure on John to be what they want him to be and Josie subconsciously wants him to live up to her idolised image and expectations of him. He is caught between fulfilling the expectations people have of him, or being himself. An example of when he is caught in the middle of his expectations and being himself, is when he confesses to Josie why he seems so ‘perfect’, “I’ve always had to be the best because it’s been expected of me.” John ultimately chooses freedom in the form of suicide, and his suicide note is the biggest evidence of the fact that he struggled to belong in between both societies. “If I could be what my father wants me to be, maybe I could stay... If I could be what you want me to be, then I'd want to stay. But I am what I am and all I want is freedom." His suicide to finally have freedom and inability to ever fully belong show that he was the one caught the most in between two societies out of all the characters.…

As a little girl I wanted to be just like Hannah Montana. As I got older, I wanted to be like Rachel Berry, a small town girl living out a big town dream. I wanted to be looked up to because of my musical talent. Walking into Mrs. Kaiser's 7th hour, 8th grade band, I didn't know that music would have such an impact in my life. Music has become the spark of my intellectual curiosity. There are millions of combinations of key signatures, chords, melodies and rhythm in the world of music just waiting to become attached to a sheet of staff lines and spaces. Ever since my first experience with music in the fourth grade, my mind began to explore all these combinations of problems. Music helped me with math, english and gave me a place to escape when I was put into undesirable situations. In Middle…

She feels that she is a “burden” to him because of her “nervous troubles”. John seems to treat the narrator as if she really does have something wrong with her even though her “case is no serious”. He tells her that “nothing was worse for a nervous patient than to give way to such fantasies”. He puts the narrator in a “nursery” as if she is a small child. He refers to her as a “blessed little goose”. He also tries to keep her away from all contact with people. He tells her that her baby makes her “so nervous” and when she wants her cousins to visit he tells her that “he would as soon put fireworks in my pillow-case as to let me have those stimulating people about now”. The narrator describes the wallpaper as “torn off in spots and it sticketh closer than a brother,” which talks about her relationship with John which is strong but they still have a few problems. Also she says, “must have had perseverance as well as hatred” which means that she believes in John and thinks that he is doing what’s best for her however she does have a feeling of hatred sometimes for him because he keeps her locked in and doesn’t treat her as a normal…

After coming to terms and understanding the death of his father, John constructed a quite beautiful, yet short and sweet stanza to sum up what he would to growing up as a man in the village of Salem and how he will live life. It says, “One may fool the hearts of many yet not get pass through to me, and although I might be condemned I must look where there is plea, and help those around to view through the lens I may look through, and do my best to do good whenever I may come by to you.” Although he directed his feelings towards myself and Rebecca, the actions of those words resonate throughout our village and the good work he does. John stood for respect, goodwill, and his undeniable selflessness. And although he had made mistakes along the way, he understood they were unjust but repented and did his best to make it right. John could always be seen around the corner trying to help out either fixing Mr. Jacobs wagon, or even carrying the heavy bags of wheat into the home of the…
