1. From the numbers mentioned it is clear to see that the most popular social media network with over 845 million users is Facebook, most of whose users are students. This research blog will speak to how social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter are a distraction for students causing them to do poorly in their education. It will also outline how the students' addiction to the social media networks can have a negative impact.
Social Networking can be a major distraction to fourth year high school students because it diverts attention away from studies by wanting to know what friends and family are up to.

On-task behavior is very important in the classroom. According to Jones & Jones (2010), on-task behavior should be magnified more so than off-task behavior. “Although we often fall into the trap of believing that critical remarks will improve students’ behaviors, research suggests that the opposite is true.” (Jones & Jones, 2010, p. 75). Technology has affected the ability to keep students on task in both negative ways and positive ways. It has affected the ability to keep students on task negatively with the distraction of personal smart phones that divert students from their school work and activities. In many of the classes that I have observed over the last school year, students were on their cell phones watching YouTube videos or checking their Facebook pages. Some teachers allowed students to have their cell phones out if they finished all of their school work and others had a zero tolerance policy for cell phones in the classroom. Technology has affected the ability to keep students on task in a positive way by using different methods to grasp students’ attention; PowerPoint presentations that can be visually stimulating, educational video clips as well, and personal devices that allow students to respond to multiple choice questions during class discussions. Teachers should regulate the use of technology to prevent classroom management issues by having a zero tolerance policy for cell phones. I believe that cell phones are more of a hindrance in the classroom and students are too distracted by text messages and Facebook updates. Reynol Junco, an associate professor of education at Iowa State University, found that while freshman struggle to balance their use, social media is less of a problem for upper classmen. The difference relates to self-regulation. Junco surveyed more than 1,600 college students about their Facebook behavior, looking at time spent strictly using the social networking site and time spent on Facebook while multitasking. Freshmen averaged a total of two hours a day. Sophomores, juniors and seniors also reported using Facebook while studying, but how it affected their grade point average varied. For freshmen, all Facebook use had a negative impact on their grades. For sophomores and juniors using Facebook while doing schoolwork hurt their GPA. For seniors, there was no relationship between the two. So the question is, is Facebook the problem? The answer is no, Facebook actually has little to do with students GPA. It isn’t rare to look around the classroom and see a few classmates on their cell phones, laptop or any other electronic device. We are very much aware of it. But some college students just let their cell phone control them. In 2012, an article was written by Arnold D. Froese along with fellow other authors about surveys and research about students who use cell phones in the classroom, stating that,”Many students admit to using cell phones for social networking purposes in the classroom” (Froese, etc). Teenagers who use their cellphones very often will have their academic progress negatively affected due to being distracted. It is not a rare occurrence for teenagers to have their phones with them while they are in class, but that is mainly because many of them do not realize the impact it is having on their grades. Researchers, Christian M. End, Shaye Worthman, Mary Bridget Matthews, and Katharina Wetterau at Xavier University did a study about the impact of cell phone rings on academic performance.
