What is Evolution? (Section 10.1, pp 222-224)
Figures to review: 10.1, 10.2

Biological evolution • Biological evolution is defined as any genetic change in a population that is inherited over several generations. These changes may be small or large, noticeable or not so noticeable.

Species • the major subdivision of a genus or subgenus, regarded as the basic category of biological classification, composed of related individuals that resemble one another, are able to breed among themselves, but are not able to breed with members of another species.

Biological populations • a group of organisms, of the same species, occupying a defined area during a specific time.

Natural selection • A process in nature in which organisms possessing certain genotypic characteristics that make them better adjusted to an environment tend to survive, reproduce, increase in number or frequency, and therefore, are able to transmit and perpetuate their essential genotypic qualities to succeeding generations.

microevolution • Evolution involving small-scale changes, i.e. within the species level, occurring over a short period of time that results in the formation of new subspecies.

scientific theory • A concept that has been well tested, and is accepted as an explanation to a wide range of observations.

theory of evolution • a scientific theory of the origin of species of plants and animals

common descent • A group of organisms is said to have common descent if they have a common ancestor. In modern biology, it is generally accepted that all living organisms on Earth are descended from a common ancestor or ancestral gene pool.

time"; it hopes to convey the meaning behind the word without using the word itself (Gross A10). Mayr 's own definition seems to be rather similar when he states, "Evolution is change in the properties of populations of organisms over time," but a word expresses more than what a clipped dictionary definition can allow (Mayr 8). When "evolution" is used in daily parlance in a non-biological context, adaption is often an…

Natural selection is a process where the differential survival of reproduction of individuals in a population brought about the evolutionary change. In this process population adapts to their changing environment. there are other forces that can cause evolutionary changes in the genetic makeup of a population. Change is one of them. Most people believe traits and populations can evolve. Pesticide resistance in insects and antibiotic resistance in bacteria are evolutionary changes in biology populations that have been observed many times. Microevolution are changes that occurred within the biological population. The changes that result in the origin of a new species…

In a scientific study of genes it was proven that evolution occurs. As defined by Webster's dictionary, evolution is "descent of organisms by modification," In other words, evolution is the changing of organisms. This is best understood in a hypothetical situation. If there is an organism X and it evolves into organism Y, both occupy different niches. Organism X eats only small seeds and organism Y eats large seeds. If the environment changes, and say acid rain wipes out all of the big seeds then only organism Y will be able to survive. This is an example of a genetic bottleneck, a reduction of genetic diversity. In another study of moths, there are black moths and white ones. In the Industrial revolution, the trees became black with soot and only the black…

This is all about biological evolution, simply put, is descent with modification. This definition encompasses small-scale evolution (changes in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next) and large-scale evolution (the descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations). Evolution helps us to understand the history of life.…

Evolution is the scientific theory about how different kinds of organisms had developed throughout the changes from the past to the present. Through evolution some species got extinct, while some were still extant and/or new species were being created. Looking at the past and the present, it helps the scientists figure more about natural selection, mutation, symbiosis, gene transfer, and genetic drift.…

Evolution is basically the change in the heritable characteristic or traits in living organisms which are passed from one generation to another and gives rise to diversity at every stage of the organism’s biological organisation. The process of evolution was not well understood until 19th century when Charles Darwin proposed the scientific theory of natural selection as a driving tool in evolution. The process involved both the macroevolution in which organisms went through major evolutionary changes over a long period of time and acquired different traits from different parents or ancestries and the microevolution in which a group of organisms went through minimal changes with time but the traits they acquired were typically from the same ancestor.…

Evolution is the theory of organisms changing over time. The first two people to explore this theory were Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace. There are four types of evolution, those being adaptive, convergent, divergent, and co-evolution. Divergent evolution is when two or more animals originate from a common genetic base. To prove divergent evolution in animals, the Ursus Maritimus or polar bear is an example.…
