Chapter 1 and 2 History summary

Everybody see 1492 being the beginning of civilization, not even thinking of the fact that many different Native Americans/Indians had come before Columbus's voyage. This chapter describes and discusses the different Native American tribes and cultures that were close by Columbus’s route to the “New World”. Specifically the Maya, Aztecs, and the Timuquans. The Maya that lived on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, had very strong traditions, including creating the world’s most accurate calendar. They did this by charting sun’s and stars’ courses over the years. The Mayas lived off of crops from the land and the see by making their own food and hunting in on land and sea. With all the exploring and hunting the Mayas did, they never came across the Empire that was a thousand miles away from them. The Aztec Empire made the Mayas great city, Talum look like a village. The Aztecs had a great city called Tenochtitlan. With this city, the Aztecs were at their highest point. In Tenochtitlan, there were temples, one who belonged to Huitzilopochtli. As the Aztec empire was growing, Huitzilopochtli grew into a god that needed human sacrifice. Most people accepted that they were a sacrifice because they saw it as a religious right. The Aztecs never knew of another Native American group a thousand miles away. The Timuquans of Florida were a Native American culture that enjoyed being outside and doing everything they had to outside. They did the same as any other culture and hunted on land and sea. They enjoyed having footraces and practices their bow and arrow skills. When summer was over, they would move into the forest for the cold seasons. And, halfway across America, there were the Natchez. The Natchez leader, The Great Sun, was believed to have Great powers, including control over the weather. When he died, the woman he married, carried on in his place. The Mayas, Aztecs, Timuquans and Natchez were only four of the hundreds of Native American...
