Chapter 1

Properties of life

a. Order: Molecules in living things are arranged in specific structures.
b. Reproduction: Organisms will reproduce their own kind; life comes from life
c. Growth & Development - DNA directs the pattern of growth and development, producing an organism that is characteristic of its species
d. Energy Processing- Organisms take in energy though various methods and make it usable
e. Response to the Environment - Organisms will respond to stimuli
f. Evolutionary Adaption - Organisms will evolve due to changes in environment and interaction with other organisms
g. Homeostasis - An organisms internal environment is regulated by mechanisms to cope with an imbalance

Biosphere- The scientific study of life
Ecosystem- a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Biological community-an interacting group of various species in a common location
Population- are groups of individuals belonging to the same species that live in the same region at the same time
Organism- any contiguous living system, such as an animal, insect, plant or bacterium
Organ system- A group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task
Organ- A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions
Tissue- a cellular organizational level intermediate between cells and a complete organism
Cell- the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, typically microscopic and consisting of cytoplasm and a nucleus enclosed in a membrane
Organelle-any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell
Molecule-a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Producer- An autotrophic organism capable of producing complex organic compounds from simple inorganic molecules through the process of photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
