A plane suddenly crashes into the North tower of the world trade center on September 11, 2001. Then, just minutes after, a second plane crashes into the south tower. This is an example of law and order being destroyed by chaos and evil because the world trade center was a powerful symbol of law and order. They used to dominate the New York City skyline. Two huge towers, both destroyed by terrorists, causing thousands of deaths. William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies demonstrates how chaos and evil can destroy law and order as proved by many symbols. One of these symbols in The Lord of the Flies is Ralph’s gradual loss of power on the island. In the beginning, Ralph is the elected ruler and has all of the power. He decides to share some of that power with Jack, in the form of the hunters. Evil has already gotten a foothold in the power structure on the island. Soon, Jack makes Ralph look bad. He tells the boys, “Ralph thinks you are all cowards, because you ran from the beast” (126). Jack and evil are trying to upset everyone into joining him. After the boys think they see a beast, Jack calls a vote for Ralph not to be leader, but nobody raises their hand. Evil is trying to upset the balance of power on the island. The signal fire, the conch, Ralph’s loss of power, and the chaos and evil in Jack all symbolize the destruction of law and order. All of these symbols are parts of society today and can be destroyed by chaos and evil. In the novel if one of these examples were not to be destroyed, chaos and evil’s rise to power would have been prevented, or at least delayed by law and order.
