Channing: A Short Story
I had just got back from dinner when I got a text message that made my heart race. It said “Come to the health center right now! It’s Channing. Hurry it’s urgent.” The message was from my good friend Nick So. I didn’t know it then, but that Monday would be the last time I would see my best friend at NMH. I raced to the health center with a million thoughts running in and out of my mind. “I just hope he’s not hurt.”, was at the front of my mind. I was greeted by one of the health staff who already knew why I was there. “Second room on the left.”, she said with a grim expression. I bursted into the room to see Channing surrounded by other students, many of them were mutual friends. I was immediately relieved to see that Channing was okay, but that relief turned back to fear when I saw the expressions around the room. Some were crying, some stared at the floor, and Nick in particular just looked angry. Channing looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “I gotta go.” I …show more content…
Apparently they had been fighting a lot and after a long period of not speaking to each other they hooked up. According to her, during this encounter Channing was too rough with her. Channing said that nothing was out of the ordinary. She reported him to the dean's and after a lengthy battle of “he said she said”, the school told Channing his best option was to withdraw if he didn't want the situation to escalate. Many, even some of her friends, believed that she was lying to get Channing removed. Almost no one believed Channing was capable of this due to his gentle nature, but there was nothing we could do. Our friend Kristin wanted to make a petition and try to prove his innocence by informing the school of past negative events involving this girl but he told her she didn't have to, “There’s nothing we can do. So when you see her in class or walking down the hall pay her no mind cause’ hassling her ain’t gonna

Dr. Bruce D. Perry was invited by the staff of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to evaluate six year old Justin, who kept on throwing his feces and food at the staff. When Dr. Perry arrived at the PICU, he heard the loud screaming before he found the boy who was obviously malnourished and was wearing a loose diaper while sitting in a cage. The crib looked similar to a dog cage with iron bars and plywood wired to the top. Justin was being treated for severe pneumonia and would fight the staff when they would try to draw blood and he would tire out his IVs. Dr. Perry knew that the more anxious someone is then the harder it is for them to express their true feelings, thoughts, and history. He also knew it is much more difficult to form a positive relationship with a child who is anxious (Perry & Szalavitz, 2009). Instead of rushing in to question Justin, Dr. Perry wants to give him the opportunity to meet him and let him have control.…

While I was waiting for my meeting, I was approached by another student, Chelsea Hernandez-Silk. Ms. Silk informed me that she thought Ms. Bracker was acting inappropriately. I then asked Ms. Silk what she was referring to. Ms. Silk informed me that Ms. Bracker was telling people that she was uncomfortable, and didn’t want to be alone with me. Ms. Silk told me that implication of her comments was clear, that I had done something threating or sexual which lead to Ms. Bracker being uncomfortable. Ms. Silk further informed me that “It was so secret that Ms. Bracker had told everyone upstairs.” When Ms. Silk said, “everyone upstairs,” she was referring to following female students who lived in the same room: Kristen Bracker, Chelsea Silk, Joni Gerrity, Precious Ndebele, and Elisabeth Fields. In addition, she talked to Ms. Williams, who lived in a different room. These means, that at a minimum, Ms. Bracker had spread the false information to 6 of the 8 female students participating in the study program, plus at least one of the male…

To gain a better perspective of the individual I was to meet so also to help form healthy expectations I reviewed the notes gathered by the hospital social worker detailing the young girl’s medical, family, and cultural background. Upon studying the information provided I learned Alexis came from an affluent two-parent household with two older siblings living in a quiet suburban town. She is an honor student enrolled in all AP courses…

Jonathon made it well known through the frustration in his voice and the clenching of his teeth that he was upset to be in the hospital. He felt that he did not have any mental health disorders or substance abuse problems, though his chart and assessment stated otherwise. The patient also vocalized his anger with his parents through vulgar language and loud, rambling thoughts. He blamed his parents for putting him in the hospital, stealing his independence and “locking him up”. It was extremely challenging to listen to the patient talk about his parents in this negative way because from an outside point of view and through patient records it was evident that his parents had his best interest in mind. His mother did call the police to find Jonathon because she was…

I repeated these words to myself as I looked in the mirror wondering how I could tell Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and sweet little Bernice… Oh, Bernice! She had just turned five less than a month ago. How could I tell them their beloved father has been shot? How will they understand? Yolanda was the oldest and the wisest. There is no way I could sugarcoat this. I slumped down behind the bathroom door and took a deep breath. What originally began as a day filled with strength, service, and self-reliance had now ended filled with despair, disbelief, and damage.…

The morning of the first day of my clinical preceptorship I had such a mix of emotions. I had been lying in bed awake for hours because I felt too much excitement to sleep. My alarm went off and the nerves set in sending one question after another swirling through my head. Would my preceptor be nice? Would I disappoint her? Would I remember my lab values? Would I remember my skills? What if someone crashes will I know what to do? If everything is okay will I know what to do? A year of nursing school was coming to an end and suddenly I felt like I had forgotten everything. I arrived at the hospital much earlier then I needed to and tried to relax. I took a deep breath and headed in to the ICU trying to pretend that I wasn’t terrified. I obviously…

After three back to back classes on a Monday morning, I walked into the cafeteria as usual to get some lunch. I was fully exhausted and felt pressured with the load of assignments piled up on me. A familiar face from a distant table was waving at me vigorously. I could tell from the evident smile, the familiar face was none other than Wesley Rains. I remember the same prominent smile on his face when he entered the first day of class. Neither had the smile faded, nor his enthusiasm. I waved back at him and went towards the table trying to imitate the enthusiasm he had on his face just to appear as receptive as him. “I am doing awesome,” This was my exact response when he asked me how I was doing. I knew inside it was not a lie. His smile and positive attitude had infected me already.…

I would think the turbulence level for Dr. Connelly and Mrs. Wong to be severe. They know come the following day there would be talk about how the school district had turned away students from entering or staying in the building due to a lack of immunizations. Though the elementary only had 11 of the 30 students that originally were missing immunizations, the fact that students wouldn’t be able to stay in school may cause a crisis with the school and students families. I would believe to positionality that Dr. Connelly would feel more turbulence since they are the school principle in comparison to the school nurse. Dr. Connelly feel responsible due to students still missing their immunizations, but also feel the parents of the 11 students…

My hospital bed was ice cold and the bleak and empty white walls depressed me as the uncomforting thought that I would have to stay here for maybe another week brought tears to my eyes. The usual and oppressive smell of disinfectant lingered in the room as I recalled that night in my head, trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, as I had done everyday since the accident. It was the day everything changed and my life was turned upside down. Forever.…

Walking down the corridors I again ask myself why life is so cruel towards some. A man, no younger nor older than myself trapped, hospitalised for the final months of his life. He had his whole life ahead of him, a budding football star and small-town musician with a loveable personality and smiling eyes. Whilst talking with many of the town’s residents eagerly awaiting updates on his condition, they began with anecdotal experiences they had of Jacob. A member of his football team quoted “You can only fail as many times as you do not attempt.” I stopped dead in my tracks before turning and sprinting back towards the hospital room. Ignoring the incredulous looks from those around me I barge into his room and repeat the inspirational words I had heard not five minutes previously. “What the hell are you on?”…
