12.1 Why is transportation important to a firm’s supply chain operations?
Transportation is pivotal to the success of an operation of any supply chain because it carries the goods as they move along the supply chain. Transportation influences, or is influenced by, many logistics activities such as the fact that transportation costs are directly affected by the location of plants, warehouses, vendors, retail locations, and customers. Inventory requirements are influenced by the mode of transport used and the transport mode influences the packaging required as well as the materials handling equipment. Customer service goals influence the type and quality of carrier and carrier service selected by the seller.
12.3 Discuss the speed of airfreight transportation in terms of the line-haul and accessorial service.
Line-haul is terminal to terminal movement of freight or passengers. Modern jet aircrafts are capable of travelling between 500-600 miles per hour, the fastest mode of transportation we know. Air is the fastest mode of transportation for shipments exceeding 600 miles. Accessorial service is transportation service that is supplemental to the line-haul. This adds to both transportation costs and transit time and also increases the number of times a shipment is handled.
12.6 How do speed limits and hours-of-service rules potentially affect motor carrier service?
Speed limits and hours-of-service (HOS) rules have long been justified on the basis of safety concerns. However, speed limits influence the amount of territory that can be covered by a trucker during a particular time period (a lower speed limit means less mileage can be covered). Hours-of-service rules limit the number of hours that can be driven in a 24-hour period as well as the number of hours that can be driven in a one week period.
12.7 What are advantages and disadvantages to a pipeline’s lack of vehicles?
There is no need for

Metabolism explains how the cells in the body use nutrients to meet its needs. Cells may start with small, simple compounds and use them as building blocks to form larger, more complex structures (anabolism). These anabolic reactions involve doing work and so require energy. Alternatively, cells may break down large compounds into smaller ones (catabolism). Catabolic reactions usually release energy. Determine whether the following reactions are anabolic or catabolic. Indicate whether each of the following reactions is anabolic or catabolic.…
