The original Central Market grocery store is a reinvented take on typical grocery store chains located in Austin, Texas. Their aim is to create an improved grocery store shopping experience focusing on fresher products, efficiency, customer service, store layout, and other subsidiary services offered. They have incorporated the look and feel of a farmers’ market into a lively, interactive service experience. The Central Market grocery store promotes discovery and exploration through its environmental dimensions to encourage customers to shop longer and buy more. The environmental dimensions of the servicescape are controlled by Central Market to influence the way people shop, providing a unique shopping experience that cannot be matched at other grocery stores. These signs are consistent with the theme of the farmers’ market. They use hand-made, painted signs throughout the store. Pastel colors can be seen on signs and the cutlery sculptures in the cafe. They often have special displays and demonstrations set in place that results in lingering customers and increased congestion throughout the store. The market also incorporates a color-coding technique to signal organic and Texas-grown produce. While way finding techniques are generally intended to reduce customer anxiety and facilitate navigation, Central Market does not provide a store map and the use of signs are rare. A common complaint among customers is the layout of the store, often requiring repeat visits to memorize the location of different items.
