The central idea of the poem ‘Where the world is without fear’

Tagore has taken this poem from ‘Geetangili’, a collection of poems or a book of poems. Tagore had a very deep religious cast of mind and he was both a patriot and an internationalist. In this poem, Tagore sketches a moving picture of the nation he would like India to be. Where everyone within the fold of brotherhood is free to hold up once head high and once voice to be heard without having any tension of fear or oppression. Where the knowledge is not restricted by narrow ideas and loyalties. The first line of the poem is one of the most important and it builds up the poem. The ‘world of freedom’, which Tagore envisions for his countrymen, can only be achieved if we poses a fearless mind. Only a fearless mind can hold its head upright. Thus, the poet wishes to be awakened to a paradise where mind can work fearlessly and the spirit can hold its head high. Where all the countrymen must come out of the aged- old world of people who have lost the vision of humanity by the narrow walls of cast, creed and religion. Prejudice and superstitions, which narrow the mind and divide the people, would not exist. Where the people would work for perfections in the clear light of reason leaving all the superstitions and the rituals aside. Tagore’s only prayer to the supreme almighty is leading the nation to such and ideal state of heaven.
