Censorship
Of the various types of censorship in Malaysia, Internet censorship is among them. File sharing websites like The Pirate Bay have been censored on the basis of piracy. Former Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi and current Prime Minister Najib Razak have pledged that Internet access in Malaysia will not be censored as it is up to parents to install their own censorship software and provide education to their children (provide self-censorship). Any act that curbs internet freedom is theoretically contrary to the Multimedia Act signed by the government of Malaysia in the 1990s. In 2006 alone, 56 publications were bannned by the Internal Security Ministry (ISM). Malaysia once banned the word “Allah” from the bible. However, the ban has since been lifted. Operation Lalang also referred to as Ops Lalang was carried out on October 27, 1987 by the Malaysian police to prevent the occurrence of racial riots due to the provocation from DAP leaders and press. The operation saw the arrest of 106 persons under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the revoking of the publishing licenses of two dailies, The Star and the Sin Chew Jit Poh and two weeklies, The Sunday Star and Watan. Malaysia has a history of censoring musicians. In 2003, American rock band Linkin Park was told to refrain from wearing shorts while performing and in 2004,singer Mariah Carey was asked to cover up. The country's opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, urged the government to order the cancellation of a concert on August 29, 2008 by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne. They also were protesting when Guns ‘n’ Roses’ ex-lead guitarist Slash was performing in 2011. Of all the types of media, television has suffered the heaviest scrutiny from the Malaysian government. Like in most Asian countries, Malaysia has banned profanities, nudity, on-screen kissing, homosexuality, and extremely graphic violence from the general viewers. Many reasons exist for people to favor censorship, both by the government and in schools. These people may feel that internet filters and rating systems insufficiently block obscene material. Some people believe that children exposed to inappropriate material will become promiscuous or will become desensitized by violence on television. The United States of America is built on two fundamental factors: freedom and capitalism. We as Americans pride ourselves in possessing “liberty and justice for all,” as declared in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our government gives us the right to speak our minds, practice our faith, and express ourselves without reservations. The economic system of capitalism stems from this laissez-faire political ideology. It allows for private systems within the country to operate without government interference. With these two factors working together, American culture is able to blossom and American citizens are able to thrive. Placing censorship on any source available to the nation, such as movies with violent scenes, is a violation of both freedom and…

What does censorship mean in the book Fahrenheit 451 and what role does it play in the society? Censorship is the suppression of speech and public communication on a society because the government thinks it is bad for their people. Ray Bradbury illustrates that the government of this time uses censorship to control their people to believe that books should be burned and that they are harmful, it is also shown that the people of the society are suppressed to the point that they are blind to the outside world and stuck watching the Televisions. The people of the society are so restrained in areas of education and are ignorant to what’s happening around them; this causes them to make mistakes such as killing someone with a car or burning someone alive like the firemen. The themes most seen in the book are censorship, education, and Ignorance; they are shown the most by the three characters of Beatty, Montag, and Faber.…

Among many people are Susan Jacoby, a journalist that is known for her feminist writings, and Susan Brownmiller, an author and a graduate of Cornell University. Censorship in the music industry is a very controversial topic. One that has stirred up much debate in the past two decades. There have been many different arguments, however a question still remains. Should music be censored or should it should not be censored. Before you can form an opinion on this, you must hear both sides of the argument. Some people believe that music should be censored so all audiences can hear it without it containing any controversial lyrics. Others believe it should not be censored, and that musical artists should be able to speak, sing, rap, or rhyme freely without anyone filtering out their own personal views or messages. Censoring makes the process of constant change and evolution of society very difficult by preventing new ideas from being presented to people.…

Censorship is a highly controversial topic regarding the arts, controlling the freedom of expression of artists to convey what is deemed acceptable within society. Ai Weiwei falls victim under the power of the regime and the influence of censorship guidelines within China, limiting the display of his art due to the important messages he raises. Andres Serrano has experienced attempted censorship on his provocative image, Piss Christ, and has been attacked for producing offensive art. Censorship aims to conceal certain artworks which clash with the viewpoints of others; however, it should not be enforced as they are confrontational, challenging audiences and act in response to political, social and cultural contexts.…

We have seen the censorship taken by the Malaysian government, blocking sites like The Pirate Bay, and WikiLeaks. Malaysia is one of the world’s strictest governments, even blocking out movies, and television shows. These acts of censorship are inexcusable. You are taking away a basic human right. The internet is here for freedom, without fear of government interference. Do not think that no one else notices. Your structured government has done the talking, and we hear loud and clear. Let this be an announcement to all your people. This is a sign, a warning, and an opportunity to listen to ideas above your own. In a way you are being stubborn. But how will this help anyone or your country. We fear that if you make further decisions to take away human freedom. We are obligated to act fast and have no mercy. For rules were meant to be broken. And corruption was meant to be washed away and forgiven. Now we will wash your corruption away so be prepared. Take this as a favor.…
