    2.1 It is self-evident that communication and interpersonal skills are crucial in the workplace. Good two-way communication is important to enable the flow of information in an effective way whether it be verbal or non-verbal. Good communication has a positive impact on the performance of the team including; everyone is clear what is expected from them, they receive good feedback and recognition of achievements which makes staff feel valued and boosts employee morale.     I was very interesting doing this assignment. I learned a lot watching people on how they dress, act or interact with others. In this assignment I watched people at my work which is a restaurant on the nonverbal codes and messages. In this area workers are supposed to give a certain standard on which people are pleased with in the end. In their own area they are supposed to keep up with their own work load. Which is taking care of the guests in their area, taking care of their work area, keeping stock up, etc. This observation was taking during their busier hours with are the weekends during 7pm-9-pm. The tables were well lit with candles and had the proper condiments needed. The tables were set close together so people had to sit in a close area. The décor was nice and accommodating.     The development in children of a young ages increases in the first few years of their life. A child aged between 0-3 their language and communication development they begin at the pre-linguistic stages starting with cooing which usually comes at around 6 weeks; this is where a baby makes cooing noises to show pleasure. These early sounds are different from the sounds they make later on which is mainly because the mouth is still developing. At 6-9 months they begin babbling; blending consonants and vowels together to make sounds that are tuneful e.g. ba, ma, da. By this time they have learnt important and essential communication skills, including eye contact, recognising some emotions and responding to them. Then at the 9-10 month stage they produce a range of phonemes or sounds however they become more limited and reflects the phonemes used in the language they are hearing. At this stage they can understand 17 or more words, they have now learnt more communication skills for example if they point or raise their voice they can attract adults attention. They can understand quite a lot of what is being said to them through word recognition and reading faces. Now when they reach the 12 months mark they repeatedly use one or more sounds which have meaning to them. These ‘first’ words are often unclear and so gradually emerge, usually one sound but use it regularly in similar situations. Then as they become older (13-18 months) they start to use one word in a number of different ways. They use holophrases to make their limited vocabulary more useful to them. One word is used in many different situations, but the context and tone of voice helps the adult understand what the toddler means. Usually by 18 months they now have between 10 and 15 words. At this time they have fully grasped how to get attention and know how to make adults laugh. The 18-24 month is the two word utterances (telegraphic speech) stage, where they grasp…

    I am currently going through a court battle with my ex-husband regarding the divorce settlement ordered August 1, 2012. Today we were in court for an order to show cause hearing due to his failure to follow the court order and pay what the judge ordered him to pay me. In New Mexico they have conflict resolution days when they have the order to show cause hearing in hopes that the parties will be able to work it out with the help of volunteer attorney/mediators. During our conflict resolution when my attorney was going over the issues my ex-husband kept interrupting and giving his opinion of what should be done and making it very clear that he disagreed with the judgment and with what my attorney was trying to say. The mediator just said to my ex-husband “O.K., we will get to that later.” Not only did we not reach an agreement the mediator never asked why he disagreed why he felt it unfair or what his thoughts were. She listened to him turn down all our offers and she said “ok, Mr. Allen does not agree with that can we come up with something else” I felt the mediator was basically just there to take notes and break up a fight if there would have been one. My thoughts on this experience are if the mediator had actually bothered to ask questions, listen and understand what my ex-husbands thoughts/ concerns were maybe we could have come up with a plan that we all could agree upon. Instead of just saying “we will get to that later” she should have actually taken a moment to ask him what his reservations were and then maybe we could have actually started a discussion. In this instance the mediation attempt was a complete waste of time due to the total lack of communication skills. There was no reflective listening so there was no opportunity for reframing or questioning. The Judge has now ordered we have a settlement with the same mediator and then continue onto court if we cannot reach an agreement at that time. My experience today was an example of a…
