How have Cell Phones changed us socially?
Innovations in society inevitably change us either for good or bad. Most however are double edged and bring with them both positive and negative effects to society. Cell phones are no different and their effect on our society has been drastic to say the least. There are many benefits that have been occasioned by the invention of mobile phones and have made life easier and better. Some of this includes facilitation in the acquisition of knowledge through mobile internet, enhancing communication because of their portability and increased trade and employment. There are several negative impacts to society among them being death and injury due to accidents while driving and talking or texting on the phone. Positive Influences of Cell Phones to Society

Telephones were one of the most innovative items of the previous century and have revolutionized the way people interact. Traditionally people had to rely on cumbersome processes to transmit data and information over long distances and communication was slow and ineffective. Moreover, communication abilities differed greatly depending on the society and some had more advantages over others. Sending urgent messages was problematic and grave consequences existed due to this inability or inadequacy to communicate using fast and reliable techniques. Therefore, the invention of the telephone provided a medium through which parties can communicate instantly regardless of distance or location. Moreover, telephones are a globally accepted mode of communication and the uniformity makes fast communication in any society possible. In addition, telephones opened up the room for further innovations which further made the transmission of data and relying of information. Cell phones have integrated the most innovative invention of modern time; the internet. The internet is a great tool and allows people to access information on any imaginable topic in an instant. The internet allows people to buy and sell products regardless of where a person is across the globe. It also enhances banking abilities and the ease of money transfer. It has allowed several innovations and changed the way people interact in business, schooling and personal communication. While traditional mails required time and a higher cost to send, emails are instant and cheaper. Internet allows oral communication at an easier cost and the ability for video calls at a cheaper rate than conventional telephone calls. This can be done between parties in different ends of the world. While the idea of a global village came to be long before the internet became globally accepted, it has made it a true reality. So the fact that cell phones now allow users to have access to all these internet features shows that there will be more changes in every sphere of our lives. People can transact business in any part or place simply through their phones. Students can study for their exams as they go about their ordinary lives or as they sit on a vehicle. People can send money at their convenience without having to go to a bank or through computers. Social networks allow people to interact and make new friends. People are different in this world and there are those who are either shy or anti social for one reason or the other. Phones and the many features they have allow people who are shy of personal contact to socialize with other people due to the anonymity of the participants. This can boost their confidence as they learn tat communication isn’t so hard and might motivate them to venture out to the real world and meet these new people. Moreover, no man is an island the ability of shy people to interact with others across social sites means that they can feel like part of the community. This increases social happiness and avoids dangerous tendencies like depression and suicide. So while some people feel that increased use of technology of discouraging personal interaction, it also acts as a platform for meeting new people and making more friends. Since cell phones are portable, they allow for the continued communication of persons regardless of place or situation. If phones didn’t exist, some people would be reluctant to leave the side of their computers but phones encourage mobility and participation in other activities since one still have access to all features offered by one’s computer. Cell phones enhance security since it isn’t as easy to cut down communication as is the case with landlines. Parents can communicate with their children in case of any emergency and a swift response can be organized to prevent escalation of the situation. Houses attacked by burglars can raise alarm and summon the police since robbers can’t block cell phone calls as easily as they can mobile lines. In addition the easy acquisition and maintenance of mobile hones means that virtually all homes have them and people in health crisis can call ambulances when the need arise and lives can be saved. Moreover, fire cases can be reported fast and fire fighters rush to the scene to save property and sometimes’ lives.
