In a positive view of social media, I plan to analyze the make up company Covergirl’s newest model who is making headlines for being the first Covergirl model to be a boy. The selection of the model, James Charles, as the newest model for the company brings up the question of traditional gender boundaries in fashion and beauty. In addition, it provides a role model for men who prefer to explore outside of these gender boundaries, and in so promoting their own self-image and acceptance. Furthermore supporting the facts that while there are some negative effects of social media, it can be used as a tool to help us grow as a society.…

Have you ever wondered why certain celebrities never seem to have a bad hair day? Is it because they are blessed with naturally gorgeous locks? Or do they spend lots of time, and money, having their hair professionally styled each day? Perhaps a more likely explanation is that they often wear lace wigs.…

The CoverGirl ad from January 2014 includes a picture of Queen Latifah in a grayish background with her green eye shadow. Queen Latifah has small brown eyes with long curly black eyelashes. She has a beautiful big smile with shiny white teeth. Queen Latifah also has a lovely pair of small gold round dangling earrings in her ears. The word “CoverGirl” is written in big bold green letter across her forehead, all to improve her appearance. Queen Latifah is written in small green letters underneath in the right hand corner. The photo shot is from her head to her shoulders, just enough for the viewers to focus on CoverGirl’s product. Queen Latifah appears to be wearing an olive green shirt, the same color as CoverGirl’s product, with her hair pulled back into a long ponytail. The advertisement effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to convince the viewers to buy CoverGirl products.…

Ellen DeGeneres was born January 26, 1958 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Growing up Ellen had always dreamed of being a veterinarian, but she was not book smart, so instead she sold vacuums, waited tables, painted, and worked as a legal secretary. “Once, during a public speaking event, DeGeneres found herself frightened by the crowd and used humor to get through the experience. She was a hit, and received offers to do stand-up comedy. She began performing in 1981, bolstered by her mother's moral and financial support” (A&E Television Networks). When she was 23 years old she started doing stand up at a local coffeehouse. “She got her big debut in 1986 when, acting on a tip from Jay Leno, The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson sent a booking agent to catch her act at the Improv in Hollywood. As a result of that engagement, DeGeneres was invited onto The Tonight Show…

According to the organization Learning to Give, more than 7.5 million Americans are currently suffering from an intellectual disability. Many do not realize how many are affected or even what an intellectual disability is. WebMD says that these disabilities are characterized by below-average intelligence or mental abilities. People with intellectual disabilities can learn and do new things, but they learn them much more slowly. People with these disabilities tend to be ignored, neglected and excluded from schools and society because many people do not realize the capability of those affected (The Special Olympics). Those affected are often underestimated; however, according to WebMD, a child with disabilities can improve by being involved in group activities. Over 200 causes of intellectual disabilities have now been identified, but it is important that those affected can experience activities like everyone around them (Meyer).…

As I cheered my athletes on to the finish line, I loved seeing the joy in their faces as their years of preparation paid off. They were talented—not just talented considering their disabilities, but talented in general. Many possessed a positivity that I hope to emulate. It was clear from my experience at the Utah Special Olympics that while I was there to help these athletes, they did far more to help me. I strengthened my leadership skills as I solved problems. I did things I was uncomfortable with. Above all, I loved watching two friends and competitors, whom I am with in an attached photo, encourage each other before they raced. As I noticed their camaraderie, I had the impression that we should all come together, despite our differences, to cheer each other on. This is the feeling that I took with me when I left the games, and it has stayed with me over six months…
