Competency Goal 1

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment

Functional Area 1: Safe

My goal is to prevent or reduce injuries while the children are in my care. This is important because young children are often not aware of hazards in their area. One of the ways to do this is by supervising the children at all times. You should always be able to see and hear the children. Another way I can do this is by checking the childcare environment, both inside and outside, every morning check that outlet plugs are in place, and there are no broken objects. I would also use a weekly checklist and make sure everything is in place. In the outside, I check for broken equipment or sharp objects. I am trained in emergency evacuation procedures and plans to remove all children from the classroom and/or building in the event of a tornado or fire. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets to prevent injury or poisoning.
Functional Area 2: Healthy
My goal is in this are is to prevent the spread of germs in the childcare classroom. This is very important because children do not have the control over their body functions and germs can spread quickly. I always wash my hands before and after helping a child in the toilet, wiping their nose, cleaning body fluids, handling food, and after outside play time. All toys are sanitized weekly, and the bathrooms are cleaned daily. During naptime, I make sure every child has his/her own bedding which are to be sanitized weekly. I educate children about the food pyramid and prepare activities to support their learning
Functional Area 3: Learning Environment
My goal is to provide children with varied opportunities for learning through play. Most young children learn by doing, I allow the children to participate in planning, and provide activities, which challenge children of all development levels.

One of my goals in the functional area of Learning Environments is provide children with many and varied opportunities for learning through play. This is an important goal for the age group children in my care because young children learn by doing, by uses their senses to gather information about the world. One of the ways I do this is by regularly observing the children in my care to see what their interests, skills, and abilities are. Then I plan activities to meet their interests and needs. Another way I do this is by setting my child care environment up in interest areas---blocks, books, art, writing, puzzles and small toys, and dress-up. I change the materials in these areas frequently, to keep the children interested in what’s going on. I like to show children new things: last week I put flax seeds in the sensory table and added warm water. The children enjoyed the slippery feeling and I was able to introduce lots of new words such as “smooth,” “slippery,” “slimy,” and so on.

I provide and age appropriate environment for the children in my care. I do this by preparing lessons, carefully selecting materials, allowing the children to participate in planning, and providing activities which challenge children of all developmental levels. I have inside gross motor activities such as a climber, beanbags, musical and dance items, and blocks. I have fine motor activities too, such as small and large beads, Legos, dress up dolls, stencils, and chain links. I provide an ample supply of books for the children to look at and read. I allow plenty of time for children to draw and practice writing skills. I have taken a learning environments class which taught me how to create natural, wondrous, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing areas in my classroom.

Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. This is done by doing my duties to the best of my ability and also by enuring the health and safety of those in my care, e.g. making sure all toys and equipment are maintained and the setting is safe. This is in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act as well as the Minimum Standards for Day Care which makes sure we follow health and safety policies and procedures. According to the Minimum Standards, we must ensure good hygiene is practiced in order to minimise the spread of infection, and when a child is ill, appropriate measures that comply with tinfection control guildelines must be taken. Young children are very venerable and are almost entirely dependent on adults to care for them in ways that help to protect them from harm. This could be physically or psychologically, u must be aware of the signs that a child may be experiencing harm and know the correct procedures to deal with it. You can safeguard the children by following the settings policies and procedures and by carrying out risk assessments to ensure that toys and equipment are safe. Assessing that the setting has no potential hazards for example socket covers on plug holes, hazard materials etc, And to follow appropriate health and safety regulations. You must set boundaries and clear expectations for children's behavior which could upset other children or cause them distress. To advance physical and intellectual competence I provide various amounts of equipment and activities that help promote the physical development of children I do this by offering activities that will allow children to use their small muscles and large muscles. Children need these types of activities so they can become familiar about how to use their muscles and to develop body strength. Activities such as jumping, running, and balancing themselves will help them gain strength in lower parts of their bodies. These activities allow them to work with their gross motor skills. Activities such as painting, puzzles, writing, coloring allows them to use their fine motor skills. I try to encourage children to use their cognitive skills. I do this by having the children think about how to solve problems rather than simply asking question and receiving and answer. For example children asked “What happens if we bring a grasshopper into the classroom?” The children brought a grasshopper into classroom to see if it would hop around, make noise, move, or stay still. Then the children and I discussed why it moved or didn’t move. I keep activities interesting so that the children will want to learn and use their minds. In the classroom cognitive skills are used on a daily basis. I encourage children to be creative. To me children should have access to materials such as markers, crayons, paint, and pencils, and paper. By having these materials available will allow them to explore and be creative. I play music also sometimes play music in different languages. By playing the music it encourages them to dance and that is a way for children to use their gross motor…

In a childcare setting the practitioners has an important role in supporting children. In a childcare setting the practitioner needs to help the children learn and achieve their full potential in their development stages; they must understand where the children are at in their development and know what they should be trying to achieve next, the practitioner can do this by spending time with the child and learning what the child can do and what they are struggling with so then they can plan activities to help the child with what they are struggling with and help them achieve their next stage of development. As a practitioner you've got to think about if the child is ready to be achieving the next stage of development because if they are not ready then it will be harder for them to do it; when a child achieves something new that they have not done before it is the practitioners job to praise them so they will feel like they did something good and will feel like doing it again as they like being praised for it and having that attention. Practitioners must make sure that all children in the setting are safe and secure; at all times children must be supervised, at least 1 of the staff members must be qualified in each room and their must be at least 2 members of staff in the room so if you need anything you can go and get it without the children being left on their own. To keep the children safe you must make sure that all dangerous objects and equipment are kept out of sight of children and make sure if it is equipment outside such as climbing frames or slides etc. that they do not go on them, you must make sure before the children go outside to play that you check whether all the playing equipment is safe so their wont be any accidents or injuries and if it is dangerous weather such as raining or snowing you must not allow the children on the equipment that they could injure themselves on. at my previous placement in the playground…

To reduce injury I always use the saying if you can predict something might happen then prevent it before. Children do not understand that there are dangers all around them, whether its the toys they play with, other kids and their belonging or the equipment that they play on. The important goals that I have are always to put the children's safety, happiness and their needs first. The best way for me to follow through on this is to make sure I keep close supervision on all children at all times. I do a complete check of the area where children are to be playing every day before children come into my room. This means that I check everything…
