My name is Crystal Cook. I was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma in 1983. Being in a military family led me to be raised in several states across the country, including Virginia and Missouri, eventually leading to Texas. In elementary school I loved my teachers. They made learning fun and exciting. I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. As I got older, goals changed and I didn’t pursue that path. I had two wonderful children and felt very strongly that I wanted to be a full time stay at home parent. I focused my time on being as involved as possible in the lives of my own children. This led to hold several positions in the school PTA, lead a Girl Scout troop, teach a Sunday school class and also assist in several sports as Team Mom. The part I loved most about my volunteer experiences was having an impact on not only my children but lives of many others as well.
I have always enjoyed working with children. Watching there eager minds soak up information like sponges is amazing to witness. There is nothing in the world like the happiness you feel when you know that you’ve impacted a little ones life for the better.
Well, fast forward a few years. I recently became a single parent. My beautiful, kind and loving daughter Alisa is 11 years old and my handsome, smart and athletic son, Xavien is 8 years old. I have ben led to supporting my family and am blessed to have the opportunity to work in a field that I have a passion for. Now that our I work for Nueces County community action agency, I want to obtain my CDA and finally fulfill my dream to become a teacher.

It fills me with joy to interact with the little balls of joy. That is why I look forward to every Wednesday when I get to help out at COTS. I love walking through those doors and encountering no response. Then Mrs. B tells them to say hello and a smile graces my face.…

This previous summer, I took care of three girls every day. One story from this summer was taking the youngest girl to swimming lessons every weekday for thirty minutes. After swimming lessons, we would travel to my house and go swimming. There, I helped and trained her to swim with a pool noodle. By the end of the summer, with lots of practice, she was able to swim all by herself. During this experience, I found myself following a routine, teaching the girls something new, and experiencing different teaching techniques. Now, I am currently working in the admissions office at Seward County Community College. I work one hour, three days a week. Working in the admissions office has helped me gain experience working with students and teachers who need assistance. Unfortunately, I sit in a chair and work on a computer which is something I don't like doing. Both of these work experiences, through the good times and bad, have help guide me to the teaching career I wish to have.…

Something emotionally changed within me the afternoon I volunteered in my sons Head Start classroom. The connection the teachers had developed with the children was amazing and warm. For several years, I continued to be a parent volunteer. The opportunity of spending this priceless time with my son provided memories that could not be replaced. I knew this was where I wanted to make a difference. After reflecting back on the developed relationships between the children and their teachers, I quickly realized teaching was a calling not just a job. I had a yearning desire to help children learn, watch them grow, and make a difference in their lives. I knew I would be making a salary that was much less than a nurse; however, money was not my motivation.…
