they had a religion
Religion change over time from peasant pagan to christianity

Byzantine Empire
They had a major religion.

2 types of christianity, one of which was called Orthodox christianity. There was a lot of conflict between the western and eastern church so they decided to divide both of the churches and to produce different versions of christianity. They weren’t in a lot off contact with each other so they had different ideas. They had different styles and beliefs.

economies were based on commercial agriculture slave and trade Slavery happened because they needed people to do the hard labor and the jobs nobody else wanted to do. More people were looking to trade slaves for military expansion since they mostly came from conquered territories. Private merchants operated most of the ships that carried agricultural products and other goods new trade routes

because they expanded the empire & wanted new products

Direct democracy: not rule through elected representatives

The Roman republic was the start of the Roman Empire. The Roman Republic Came to the Roman empire under the control of Augustus who was named the first emperor of rome.
Byzantine Empire
They had a bureaucracy and aristocracy. They needed a system to stabilize the empire and to have order or else it would be chaos.
The aristocrats (the nobles) were recruited from all social classes

Justinian made a new code of laws

Global connection : Trade- it also occurred with other parts of Africa, particularly in the northeast Asia- particualrly chinese silks
