YPI Essay The Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizen Association or CCECA deserves the five thousand dollar grant because they help something that really needs help; Chinese Elders. The CCECA was founded in 1985 as non-profitable charity with only fifty members. Providing a great variety of services and programs, from social activities and community support to health services. It currently has over five thousand, one hundred members. The CCECA's vision is to empower and advocate Chinese seniors to lead and live a happy and independent life. Chinese Elders have a lot of trouble doing small, typical things that we do in our daily life with little to no effort at all. The CCECA helps them with this. Chinese elders are extremely vulnerable to being bullied and abused and isolated due to the fact a lot of them cannot speak English and they are older so they are weaker and slower than others and they struggle to accomplish basic routines in their daily life. Chinese Elders have trouble overcoming, adapting and fitting into society because they are older and some speak little to no English at all causing it to be harder and longer for them to learn to adapt to today's society. Social isolation last longer effect on seniors because they have no one to turn to here for help or even someone to talk to and some would even avoid contact with others, leaving them even more isolated. The CCECA helps with all of this. The CCECA provides over seventy services; normal services include social, recreation, education, health and support services that help with people experiencing completing or obtaining basic needs. Some health services offered are weekly mobile laboratory and the annual event of flu vaccination and

    The biggest disadvantage of the Central Board of Secondary Education Continuous Comprehensive Learning programme is the grading system that it uses. [ Students scoring 90 marks and 99 marks respectively will still both attain an A* grade, so it could be described as unfair for the student scoring the higher mark. One other shortcoming is the fact that huge numbers of students are grouped together. For example, last year there were 348 students in Navi Mummbai at Universal Tutorials all scoring more than 90 per cent. It is possible that a scenario will emerge wherein all students scoring above, say, 91 per cent in all subjects will have the same cumulative grading. This poses the problem of how do you rank them? What will the admission process for the Standard XI based on? In an attempt to address the problem a percentile mark has been introduced by the board. The percentile of a student indicates the position or rank of the student in percentage form. The top ranked student will get a percentile of 100. This is calculated by the formula, 'Number of students below student X 100 divided by (total no of students -1). However, this in itself brings its own setback. The grading system may actually lead to more stress and disincentive to performance. In addition to CBSE, Secondary School Certificates by state boards and those governing the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education are also conducting exams for Standard X and continue to follow the marks system and percentage of mark in each subject. Marks percentage and percentile are not comparable. This leads to an open ended situation particularly for the Standard XI admission process and those seeking admission from CBSE to other boards. This issue is still to be resolved and a decision needs to be made regarding how it will be tackled.…

In 2007, elderly residents of Dalian accounted for 16.85 percent of its population, which is far above the national average of 12.26 percent. According to the United Nations, Chinese aged 65 years and older will account for 16 percent of the population by 2030 and this will increase to 24 percent by 2050. In places like Shanghai, the population has been aging since 1979. It currently has more than 3 million registered individuals over the age of 60 accounting for over 22 percent of its population. As Chinese society changes and modernizes this large demographic shift is set to become one of the major challenges that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will have to manage in order to maintain stability. The most pressing question that the CCP will face in the next 20 to 40 years is who will take care China’s elderly. The growing demographic shift is accompanied by mitigating factors that make this issue of more concern than in other aging societies such as Canada or the United States. China’s immature economy is not yet equip to handle a flood of elderly individuals that will need some sort of social assistance in their golden years particularly for those individuals who cannot rely on traditional methods of eldercare as a result, in the absence of independent social organizations, the state will be forced to fill in this void and shoulder most of the burden of caring for the China’s elderly by developing methods for the delivery of eldercare that are in line with China unique circumstances.…
